"Photography Business Basics is a book that would have helped me greatly as a young photographer. I learned how to be an artist first, which was fine, but I struggled with the business end of photography. Many wasted years! As I was going through this book I thought to myself that business instruction is so lacking in our industry. Look through hundreds of photography YouTube videos, for example, and you will find that only a few even touch on the business end of things. This needs to change, which is why Natasha and Mark’s invaluable book is perfectly timed. Our industry is advancing and shifting rapidly, and my advice is to use this book as a solid foundation. Good business practices will help you get paid for doing the thing you love to do!"

    PREFACE

Congratulations and Welcome to Photography Business Basics: 10 Years of Photography Business Knowledge in 10 Short Chapters!

By picking up this book, you recognize that beginning, building and maintaining a career as a Photographer requires business skill and sense.

The knowledge within these pages was acquired over a decade spent scouring the internet and absorbing literally thousands of blog posts, webinars and courses, then distilled to the essential techniques necessary to succeed.

As two real world photography business entrepreneurs who’ve struggled and learned how to go from starving artist to savvy businessperson, we hope to help the most number of people have the greatest success in photography by avoiding the pitfalls many artists in the business world fall prey to.

We truly hope the information in these chapters will help you.

Now, let’s begin with the Basics ...

    INTRODUCTION

So, you got into photography, maybe as a way to express your creativity as an artist. Capturing Images involves so many aspects: it’s an art, it’s a science, it’s feeling, it’s technical. And these aspects are just the preliminaries.

Talent and skill with a camera is the starting point on the journey to become a professional Photographer, and this book is not about how to take better pictures. It’s about becoming a better businessperson so that you can make a living taking pictures.

This book is also not about how to land a Photographer’s agent. Landing an agent as a Photographer is akin to landing an agent as a model, or landing a minor or major league sports agent. It is an exceptional feat to accomplish, and if you are able to accomplish it, huge congratulations are in order.

Even with an agent on board, it is still important to become familiar with the contents in this book, as your rep will most likely not tell you what your ten-year plan and exit strategy are, how you should craft your Client experience, or how to manage your money. Finally, no one will or should care as much about your career than you, especially one who is only earning 15% to 20% of your income.

Here, we’re going to assume you have the artistic ability and knowledge to take outstanding photos with every frame you capture. Now it’s time to hone your business acumen.

The term starving artist stems from the long-held notion that creative people lack business sense. While this might be true in many cases, just as you learned about photography, you can learn about business too.

The good news is: the fundamentals of business hold true for any industry and rarely change dramatically.

If you can reprogram your mindset (more on this in Chapter 3) to recognize that you can apply your natural creative abilities to the business side of things (especially the marketing side), then this learning curve will definitely be more enjoyable for you.
