    Introduction

    ––––––––

e love network marketing. This profession has truly changed our lives. However, it wasn’t always rain bowing and unicorns; we had to weather many storms, especially

in the initial seasons of our business. When we were introduced to network marketing, we didn’t have any business or leadership experience. We always joke with our mentor that we were a huge project, and we thank her and all the other people who poured so much of their wisdom into us. With their help along with God’s blessings and provision, we were able to make our dreams come true in this profession.

We decided to write this book because we see a disconnect between the reality of network marketing and the way much of society views it. Many people believe network marketing is beneath them, but from our perspective, everything they want—uncapped income, leverage, time freedom, and little financial risk—is available as a package only in network marketing.

Network marketing professionals, or should we say unprofessional, are the reason behind this negative perspective. We include ourselves in this category because we have made these mistakes and have been That Guy many times. Really, we’re not all bad people who lay our heads on

our pillows at night with a maniacal laugh and scheme up ways to burn our friends.

Network marketing professionals are good people who make mistakes because we simply don’t know not to make them. These mistakes may have been modeled by certain leaders and were then passed down through their teams like a bad generational iniquity. And again, we’ve done the same, so please don’t think we’re standing on a podium pointing fingers at everyone else. You will see throughout this book that in most of these mistakes, we are pointing the finger at ourselves!

Also, the mistakes we discuss may seem like common sense, but they’re not. If they were, so many people out there wouldn’t be making them repeatedly. That’s what makes these mistakes so deadly: people don’t think they need to watch out for them! They’re like an insidious virus infecting the organization and crippling it from reaching its potential.

We want this book to be entertaining, and we want this book to be value-packed with tips that can truly transform your business and your team. At times, we may get passionate and you may feel a little butt kicking, but just know that we are writing it out of love. We’ve been there, and we’d rather you not go down the same path.

If you want your team to flourish but dread the awkward conversation about how they’re unknowingly acting like That Guy, we recommend taking a preemptive strike and getting this book into the hands of all your leaders, business partners, and every new person who joins your team. Let us have the awkward conversation for you, especially with those who have already been in the business. They may read these s and

be able to see that they’re making some of these mistakes. And here’s the best news of all: they can do it privately and begin to make changes instantly without you having to intervene.

We are a husband-and-wife team, and we both passionately poured our experiences into this book. This is how the book will read: Michelle, who for some reason made more of these mistakes, writes a lot of the stories and examples of That Guy. Adam, who is a master at coaching, provides the tips to implement in your business. We have equal parts in our contributions; Michelle loves telling stories and Adam thrives on giving meaty take-aways. We hope you enjoy reading this book—and that it transforms the way that people on your team represent network marketing.

Chapter 1 What Is Network Marketing?

    ––––––––

etwork marketing is also known as multi-level marketing or referral marketing. There are two revenue options with network marketing: sales and recruitment. Salespeople can

recruit other people to sell products, when the recruited person joins, they are under the salesperson who recruited them. Salespeople recruiting others receive bonuses when someone begins to sell under them. This structure of earning money for recruitment is why some people consider network marketing pyramid selling and liken it to pyramid schemes.

It is also confused with affiliate marketing for the same reason. Affiliate marketing has a pyramid structure like network marketing, in that the people at the top of the pyramid started with the company earlier than those who joined recently. Those at the top of the company tend to earn more because their affiliations or networks are wider spread than those who just began. Affiliate marketing is where you sell a company’s products online, using wholesalers and manufacturers. You essentially market their company with your own website, with an investment to pay for the website and the training. Think of affiliate marketing like it is a franchise that is online selling products.

Network marketing is product or service based, where you can sell online or in person. You have an inventory. Product sales are the best

money-making revenue stream for network marketing. The definition of network marketing is direct selling, where salespeople sell products directly to consumers through referrals and word of mouth marketing. You may have some companies in mind that are true network marketing companies, after all, they have been around for decades. You may have attended a party for a bridal shower or hosted party, without understanding that it was a network marketing company behind the curtain. The term is one that has been around, but we often consider such companies as part of the door-to-door sales type.

    Major Network Marketing Companies

    Avon

    Mary Kay Cosmetics

    Tupperware

    Pure Romance

    It Works

    Young Living

    Doterra

The misconceptions about network marketing have come about because of fraudulent pyramid schemes, but from this list you can see there are legitimate companies offering part-time, flexible work to people who need extra cash. It is only when network marketing firms

offer more incentives for recruiting new members than for the sales of their products or services that rumors of fraud begin.

    History of Network Marketing

The concept is not new because network marketing started in the 1920s. Nutrilite, formerly known as California Vitamin Company started in the 1930s. California Perfume Company also started in the 1930s and is better known as Avon.

It has evolved from door to door sales and house parties to online sales. Women mostly joined network marketing companies to work, without being out of the house the entire day. It gave women something to fill their time. It also gave them products to use, and ways to be social. Anything from cosmetics to kitchen items are sold through network marketing companies. Pampered Chef, for example, is one company that offers cooking utensils, pots, and pans.

Women could use their income from these sales to help the household or
