Diary of a Piglin Book 9 - Mark Mulle

    Day 1

Johansson and his daughter, Beatriz, worked together to put up the biggest Nether Portal ever built in this land. It was an outstanding sight! I had never seen such a big purple frame in my life.

Right before our eyes, history was being written. We knew the importance of fighting the Ender Dragon, the importance of defeating the wild beast once and for all, and the urgency to bring him back to the realm where he once belonged.

Come on now, my friends, adventure awaits! Said Peter shortly after crossing through to the other side, on the back of the Nether Dragon D’vart. As opposed to the Piglin riding him, D’vart only muttered a few words:

Ok, I guess I can try now.

He seemed worried. I could feel the uncertainty in his voice; I could see it in his eyes. D’vart had never taken such a critical step in his life. One day he’s living his normal life in the Nether and in the next, he’s crossing through a giant portal and entering a dimension once feared by the dragons themselves.

It’s no wonder he felt unsafe or uneasy.

I wanted to tell him that everything was going to be alright. I wanted to offer some kind words of encouragement, or inspiration to help drive him towards his objective. But honestly, my dear Diary, what did I know? The future which lay ahead of us was uncertain and most likely, a cruel one. No one can tell for sure what may happen after we enter the Overworld. Once we face that Ender Dragon.

Now it’s our turn. Let’s go, guys. Johansson stepped into the Nether Portal and disappeared before our eyes. Beatriz and I were the last ones remaining in the Nether. In the meantime, I kept staring at the Portal in complete silence. Beatriz wanted to check on me just to be sure.

Calvin, are you okay? Beatriz looked at me confused. You seem lost in your own thoughts.

Yeah, I am uh I was just thinking about stuff, you know? I replied, trying to find an excuse and avoid having a strange conversation with her. I simply didn’t want to worry her.

Thinking about what, to be exact? She wondered.

Well… I tried to put everything into words. It’s just that…

Don’t worry. You don’t need to say anything if you don’t feel like it. Beatriz interrupted me. I know we have been through a lot lately, Calvin. This deal with the Ender Dragon and the Nether Dragons, it’s not something that a person learns how to deal with overnight. It’s a tough situation to be in. I never thought I would be here, doing this. I must confess I feel scared most of the time.

Really? But you are a scientist… I thought scientists were always ready to face anything.

Well, you are not wrong, but behind the scientist, there is also a human. I suppose it doesn’t matter if it’s a human, a Piglin, or a Dragon, after seeing D’vart’s reluctantly entering that Portal, I realized fear is a common feeling across all creatures. The fear of the unknown, of what is yet to come. It is perfectly normal to feel scared at times, Calvin.

I know. You are correct, Beatriz. I am scared as well. I feel like we are fighting against all odds here. Taming the Ender Dragon is one of the hardest things we have ever done, and now the beast is out there, flying amok and putting others in danger. It’s also our fault. The Dragon is on the loose because of us, because of me. I have responsibility in this. That’s why I am also scared. Scared of not only what may happen in the near future, but also scared of the consequences of my past actions. I replied.

I understand. She said, putting her hand on my shoulder. Again, rest assured it is perfectly normal to be scared of your own actions from the past. However, don’t keep bothering yourself with the same problems. Don’t ask yourself what could have been, but what can be. You cannot change the past, Calvin. I cannot change it, either. The only thing we can do right now is cross that Portal, help D’vart defeat the Ender Dragon somehow, and then drag that beast back to where it belongs. From there, I suppose the elder Krop might be able to do the rest all by himself. Beatriz said.

Yes. You are right. Thank you for the kind words, Beatriz. I guess that’s what I needed to cheer me up once again. I replied. I suppose I was feeling down because of all the stress and the tiredness.

Yep, we all deserve a vacation after we are done here. She said, staring back at the Portal. So, what do you say? Are you ready to go in now? The others must be waiting for us.

We should not keep them waiting any longer. I said. We should do this together!

Okay. Ready? Beatriz asks me, holding my hand.

    Ready. I replied.

Let’s go. We said together, jumping through the purple frame.

As we made our way through the Portal, those mere seconds took an eternity to pass by. I had some time to think of everything we had done. From the day I first met Johansson, that time Beatriz entered the Nether all by herself to find her father, the day we faced Murray together, the day I met Peter and we went on an adventure to save Minerland from the Triad Society, and now, the day our group is reunited again to defeat the Ender Dragon and rescue a whole species of nearly-extinct Nether Dragons.

Phew! I don’t know what I did to deserve such a chaotic and memorable life, my dear Diary. I had my ups and downs, moments of victory and defeat. In the end, I would not exchange my life for anyone else’s. I would not change the past, even the mistakes we had. Beatriz was right. Looking back and crying over spilled milk is not the right thing to do. Moving forward is always the best option!

Before I realized it, I was already in the Overworld. Everyone was looking at me; D’vart, Peter, Johansson, and Beatriz.

Calvin, are you okay? Do you need to rest for a bit? You seem off, buddy. Johansson said.

No, I am fine. Beatriz already helped me a lot. I just had to take some time to think. I replied. Now, shall we go? We have an Ender Dragon to tame.

Heck yeah. Peter replied. That’s the Detective I know.

All right, let’s get going. Johansson replied.

It was time to face the Ender Dragon in the Overworld.

    Day 2

Once in the Overworld, our group had to find the Ender Dragon before it got to Minerland and the nearby Stronghold. Thanks to Johansson and Beatriz’s precise calculations, their Nether Portal had brought us right next to the city.

That’s what I call precision, guys. We’re at Minerland’s doorsteps. Peter joked.

Thanks. The Nether-to-Overworld ratio is one of the most useful measurements in existence. Besides, this new Portal is right above the underground mine, where the original Nether Portal is located. Johansson said. Just far enough blocks away so both Portals won’t connect to one another.

Wait, can Portals connect to each other in the same world? I wondered.

Yes, that can happen, it’s what we call Portal Linking. It can mess up directions pretty badly. There must be a safe distance so that doesn’t happen. Beatriz replied. In other words, if we hadn’t taken the proper time to calculate this distance, we would have teleported right into Minerland’s Entrance Border, inside the abandoned mine, where all the Border Patrol agents work. Can you imagine a 40-feet long Nether Dragon inside that place? Yeah, me either. Beatriz said.

That sounds dangerous. It makes this whole thing even more impressive. Peter said.

So, this is the place you guys call home. D’vart said, gazing at the horizon. It’s an interesting world, I give you that. But it lacks lava.

Lava is not exactly one of our biggest concerns over here. Johansson said. Anyway, please take us to the Stronghold, D’vart. We must protect that place and make sure the Ender Dragon doesn’t get there before we do.

Roger that. Get on my back and give me the directions. D’vart said, crouching on the ground. We climbed on his back and he flew away.

"Okay, just keep heading in this direction, towards the city. We must pass over it and go North. The Stronghold shouldn’t be much farther from there.

As we approached Minerland, the citizens below seemed shocked and utterly terrified of the Dragon’s presence. D’vart was flying low enough that we could hear their screams
