    Chapter 1: Fallout

    ––––––––

The wooden door creaked open. A flurry of footsteps followed. The air was musty and damp. Perry took a deep breath. He looked to his left to get a glimpse of the sky, only to find a solid wall with no opening. He had forgotten that he was deep underground; there was no sun or sky to look at. He let out a deep sigh before glancing at the door to find Hermes and Steve approaching him.

Well, aren’t you a sleepy head? Hermes teased Perry. It’s almost noon.

Hard to tell the time when it’s always so dark, Perry replied.

Nothing we can do about it, can we?

Perry sighed, Nothing we can do.

The world was completely overrun by monsters. There were so many in number that living on the surface was completely impossible. You would need at least a few people with fairly powerful grimoire to stand guard all the time if you wanted to keep the perimeter secured. The constant waves of monsters never seemed to stop. They all got so tired of battling the monsters that they decided to finally move underground.

It had been around two months since they moved to the underground base, which happened to be Steve’s basement. The basement was tightly secured with a lot of traps and heavy iron doors. Getting out of the base was also a pain because you had to be ready to face around a hundred mobs just to get out. The monsters weren’t really that powerful, but their sheer quantity made it quite annoying to deal with them.

Get up, it’s time to go now, Hermes told Perry.

You go ahead. I need a minute. Perry replied.

It was the usual. They would go out and venture around. They would clear up the area first and then go looking for the curses. There were   still six of them left. And, of course, there was Hereb. They had to make sure to destroy the minor curses and only then they would have a real shot at taking down Hereb.

Perry slowly got up. He took out his grimoire and pulled out the armor. Perry still hadn’t found The Book of a Thousand Voices, which was a lot more powerful compared to the one that Xev had given him. But he couldn’t complain. Even though his current grimoire was comparatively weak, it was a lot better than having a set of iron or even diamond armor. The added special abilities were quite nice to have.

Hermes was standing in the hallway. Perry quickly got up as he didn’t want to keep him waiting. He walked to the hallway, and off they went. The underground base was mainly a long hallway with an entrance. The hallway connected the five rooms. It wasn’t the best base out there, but it was better than being constantly harassed by monsters. Hermes and Perry quickly made it to the entrance and pulled a lever. The door opened up but there was another door in front of them. They moved forward. The door behind them closed and the one in front of them opened. It was a sort of airlock to prevent monsters from entering.

That airlock was the last line of defense. They had many redstone contraptions that Steve had made. There were automatic traps and three more doors that they had to manually open with a lever from inside. Then they had to get out of Steve’s basement and through the heavy iron trapdoor. It was impossible for any monster to get inside.

Perry met Alex on his way out. Alex and Steve usually stayed back at base and kept the monsters away from the place. They occasionally went out on mining runs or whenever they ran out of seeds or saplings. They had a full farm on the third and the fourth floor of Steve’s base and had a garden on the roof. Alex had never imagined that Steve’s unnecessarily huge house would be so useful.

Good morning, Perry! Alex greeted cheerfully. They were going through some pretty tough times, but Alex’s optimistic personality never changed.

Good morning, Perry greeted back. It’s almost noon, huh.

Yep. You slept for a long time. But it’s fine. If you guys go into a cave, get some flint for me. We are running a bit low on arrows.

Ok, will keep that in mind. With that, Perry and Hermes took off.

Alex operated the automatic turret. There were dispensers on the main entrance filled with arrows. The contraption was obviously made by none other than Steve himself. The only problem was that it could go through stacks of arrows in minutes. But other than that, it was incredibly effective against the monsters.

Hermes and Perry walked through the forest. The forest had grown a lot. The yard wasn’t maintained at all. There was no trace of the farm or the back yard. The whole place was overgrown with trees of the same pale color. They looked like they were getting their life drained from them.

I have some bad news, Perry, Hermes said grimly, breaking the silence.

What is it? Perry replied, curious. Everything had been going downhill for a while so Perry wasn’t really surprised.

The Nether is gone, Hermes said grimly.

Perry’s eyes widened, What do you mean by that?

Steve and I found a broken portal this morning. We found some obsidian in a chest and fixed it, but when we tried to activate it, there was nothing. The portal didn’t open.

It was a massive blow to their plans. They all were planning on gathering the pigmen forces from the Nether to help them. There wasn't really anyone left in the Overworld. All the known villages had disappeared. Jarod and Razor were missing along with the whole pig community. There weren’t any pigmen who stayed in the Overworld. And Perry had no idea if Trevor and Kayn were cured or not.

Perry had gotten quiet. The pigmen from the Nether were their last resort. They planned on calling the reinforcements from the Nether. It would’ve made their jobs a lot easier if they could at least get a couple of pigmen to help them. But with the Nether now inaccessible, they were completely on their own.

Everything is getting worse. One bad news after another. We need to do something about these curses soon, Perry said with confidence. He knew that if they stopped trying to save the Overworld now, no one else would have the chance to do it.

Well, I don’t only have bad news today. I also have a rare good one, Hermes said with a smirk.

Hmm, surprising. How good is it?

Steve and I stumbled onto some strange things while searching for the portal.

    Strange things like...

They were the remnants of a curse. There was someone who had already killed the curse before we got there.

    "Wait, what?! There
