First of all I would like to say that there is no recipe like carrot cake, there is no manual for what we are going to discuss in this book. Raising children is very, very difficult since you don't have maturity and responsibility, and at the same time it's the best thing in life!

But I must remind you that there are very simple, mature and healthy ways to make our children grow up to be better adults.

    PREFACE

I was kindly invited to write the preface to the book A Half Child, by the young writer Antonio Voorhees. This invitation filled me with immense joy and, at the same time, gave me an immense responsibility. Until then I had never been invited to do something like that. I have always given lectures, lives, conversation circles in schools, colleges, collaboration in dissertations, interviews on radio and TV

programs, whether to talk about the work of the Council or militancy with the black movement. The theme chosen by Voorhees is of great value and it is essential that it be addressed today to guarantee the rights of children and adolescents. Human relationships are too complex and challenging and sometimes difficult to manage, especially when it involves a human being as fragile and vulnerable as a child. In the following pages, Voorhees tells us about the importance and responsibility we have as adults and, theoretically, mature people, of knowing how to deal wisely with the demands presented by our Kids. Thus, the challenge of taking children and adolescents out of the crossfire of adult relationships and remnants of conflict comes to light. Relationships that exist between mothers and fathers. Voorhees talks about the importance of unconditional acceptance of the child, changes in habits and routines and this new context of separated mothers and 3

fathers. It also talks about the importance of the support of the extended family in this new and delicate moment, and how important it is for the parents to gradually overcome relational conflicts and prioritize the affective bond with the child to shield them from any and all complications caused by people big of history. The author's care and concern to consolidate himself as a father present and active in the daily life and in the life of little Enzo is perceptible. Voorhees guides us and advises us to guide the relationships between the parents, always on dialogue and respect, guiding the parents on understanding their supporting role and orbiting around this main actor who is the child in question. The topic addressed in this book is relevant, since parental alienation is one of the greatest demands that come to the attention of Guardianship Councils. Alienation sometimes generated on purpose or in an irrational way, but which can leave irreversible consequences in the life of the child involved. We know that it is not always easy to digest the end of a relationship and that often, out of fear or insecurity of losing the affective bond, the child is used as a maneuver to keep the flame of this conflict alive. However, it is necessary to overcome such conflicts for the sake of the child. Below you will see how Voorhees talks about his experiences in driving, educating and living with little Enzo, the importance of preserving the child and any unnecessary exposure, of how important the presence of parents is in every way, especially in addition to existing legal obligations, warns us about the importance of parents fully assuming their 4

responsibilities, avoiding outsourcing, taking into account criteria of empathy, also taking into account the demands brought by the child , but mainly the riches and benefits that living with the child brings us. Voorhees wisely illustrates what article 22 of the Statute of Children and Adolescents determines, which says: Art. 22. Parents are responsible for the maintenance, custody and education of their minor children, and it is also up to them, in their interest, to comply with and ensure compliance with the judicial determinations.

It is also possible to notice that Voorhees' writings are also in line with article 4 of the ECA where he says that: It is the duty of the family, the community, society in general and the public power to ensure, with absolute priority, the realization of the rights related to life, health,
