"Common sense gives you common results. I have a sense inversely common to common results. I choose uncommon sense, because it gives me uncommon results. Now the question is, ‘Are you a commodity or a commander? Come on man!’"

    Thabo Manyaka

    Preamble

We, as a people have the birthright liberty if not responsibility to recognise and acknowledge that as humans we need to set forth principles for ourselves – some a thousand years old and others less so. Principles which will provide us with guidance – protect and uphold the essence of civil rights and the very nature of our psychology, spiritual and economic liberties and independence for all generations. Principles put in place by our leaders but also by the masses of ordinary individuals who understand and respect the true inner spirit of a people. But those core spiritual beliefs and virtues may be tested over time, and we as a united people need certain reassurances from poems, songs, pictures and written scriptures to give us guidance and stamina in times of difficulty and despair.

I believe you chose to open this book for that particular reason. Perhaps the past few days or years you have been delaying yourself from reaching your goals and aspirations. Some days you may feel enthusiastic to push yourself and some days you may feel awful and too tired to continue to seek yourself and your reason for being. Your consistency and dedication may only be short-term. At times you may feel like a lost cause and look down on yourself. You probably chose to do so because you realised that you have been operating below your potential. Lately your theory, faith and philosophy about life may have come under scrutiny and prejudice.

Let me assure you, by opening this book you have inadvertently displayed first steps of self-improvement, making your dream become a reality and stepping closer towards what is truly yours. In simple terms we can both agree that your desire to improve and be guided by principles outweighs your state of self-pity and doubt, thus giving you an upright advantage to most. Tap your shoulder, because you are heading in the right direction.

My guess is you are wondering who this rude clown is writing about your flaws and imperfections, who greets without introducing himself first. Right? I get carried away in motivation sometimes and I sincerely ask you to bear with me. Just blink your eyes for that matter if I get carried away again.

My name is Thabo Manyaka. I am the second son of Manas (father) and Pearl Manyaka (mother). I have two siblings: Katlego Manyaka (older brother) and Bontle Manyaka (little sister). I am a business graduate from Regenesys Business School and also the co-founder of an initiative. The initiative mentors and supports less privileged and abused children who have no prospects for the future to have better lives, no hope, humanity or dignity.

My girlfriend, Boitumelo Mahlangu, and I started the initiative together. It marks the birth of our relationship and aims to emphasise the importance of valuing life. Both of us felt that we had something to give – a purpose to the universe. We believe that we are all spiritually and physically entwined to manifest wonders through that which was given to us. These are the wonders that every country’s democracy, independence and freedom embody in its constitution.

We believe that humanity is a holistic manifestation of universal connectedness – a connection that today crosses our minds rather than crossing our paths. It was once a connection that became an avalanche – an avalanche that carried snow of humanity and love and fell in the heart of every man. Today, I suppose, we can only declare it as a season of history that defied the laws of nature. Note that I use the word history because understanding life’s true meaning, unity and equality is a branch of knowledge that left our memories and hearts far too long ago. This concept seems out of reach and hard to fathom. Our organisation and the purpose of this book was founded on the idea of such basis of humankind – a purpose for a people. (You can hashtag it on social media I suppose.)

In my early years of growing up I was diagnosed with asthma – a respiratory condition marked by attacks of spasm in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty breathing. It
