On Being the Happy Professor
The pursuit of happiness is a common goal in life, with a survey revealing that it is tied with great/fulfilling relationships. However, there is no magic formula for achieving happiness, but there are many necessary ingredients that can increase the likelihood of being a fulfilled, happy individual. Ancient philosophers and contemporary empirical research have provided insights into our universal human nature and how to achieve maximal happiness. Key life decisions that contribute to happiness include choosing the right life partner and the ideal job or profession. The inverted-U curve, which captures the fact that too little or too much of something is worse than having just the right amount, can be applied in various fields.
The path to happiness requires construing life as a playground, allowing adults to foster playfulness in most endeavors. This approach is based on the idea that life is an intellectual playground with exciting twists and turns. A rich life requires sampling from a broad range of experiences, and successful individuals are often antifragile
when it comes to failure.
An ancient Greek thought that seeking ataraxia (tranquility of mind) was an important objective to living the good life. Regret can create turmoil within our inner thoughts and can eat away at us like a flesh-eating fungus. To avoid regret and achieve tranquility of mind, we should examine regret stemming from actions and inactions.
Irrespective of our disposition or outlook on life, we always have the power to affect our well-being in positive ways. Self-help books, based on time-tested ancestral wisdom, up-to-date evidence-based findings, or poignant personal anecdotes, can be successful in offering solutions to fundamental Darwinian-rooted insecurities. However, these books can be rooted in quackery, faulty reasoning, and incomplete or missing evidence.
In conclusion, the pursuit of happiness requires a balance between maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain. By embracing the importance of hope and optimism, individuals can overcome life's challenges and achieve a fulfilling and fulfilling life. The author, Saad, has always had an interest in criminal psychology, clinical psychology, and psychiatry, but opted against pursuing studies in those areas due to his personal feelings and the anti-scientific nature of many therapeutic approaches in the mental health professions. He eventually forged a career at the intersection of evolutionary psychology and consumer psychology, and his earlier interests in mental health have materialized in several ways.
