    How your digestive system works

    Suffering from intestinal diseases can be really frustrating, very often abdominal pain feels sharp but generic, it could lead you to wonder "what's wrong with me, what's wrong with my digestion? A deep understanding of your digestive system could open your eyes and answer your question.

    Digestion is the breakdown of food into molecules or small chemicals that can be absorbed by the body as nutrients. Most of the substances in our diet cannot be used by the body in their natural state. Therefore, it is important that they are broken down into smaller particles, so that they can be absorbed into the blood and then distributed to all parts of the body. The digestive system is responsible for breaking down and distributing food to all parts of the body.

    Digestion is both a mechanical and an enzymatic process.

    Food is broken down into simpler chemical compounds. A healthy adult consumes daily at least a kilo of solid food and one or two liters of liquids. These food substances have to be digested before they can be absorbed into the blood and distributed to the tissues of the body. The gastrointestinal tract, also known as the digestive system, plays a very important role in the digestion, distribution and absorption of food to the different tissues of the body.

    The digestive system includes all the organs responsible for the ingestion, degradation and absorption of food substances, as well as the elimination of waste.

    Digestion is the fundamental process to ensure the supply of nutrients and energy to the human body.

    Through the action of the digestive system and the organs that compose it, food and fluids are transformed so that they can be absorbed by the body's cells.

    The organs that make up the digestive system are:

    ❖ The mouth and teeth;

    ❖ the pharynx;

    ❖ Esophagus;

    ❖ Stomach;

    ❖ The liver;

    ❖ The pancreas;

    ❖ Small intestine;

    ❖ the large intestine

    mouth and teeth

    The mouth is the cavity through which food is introduced, that is, the substances from which our body will recover the components for its sustenance, both in matter and energy.

    The mouth is made up of an upper part, the maxilla, and a lower part, the mandible, made up of the bones of the skull.

    In the mouth begins the modification of food and then digestion. Thanks to the action of the teeth, which break up the food, the tongue, which removes it, and the saliva, which contains lytic enzymes, the food begins to be processed and made suitable for subsequent processes.

    Teeth are hard structures, made up of dentin, a particular, highly mineralized bone tissue, covered on its outer portion by enamel, an also mineralized epithelium that allows the strong mechanical crushing action characteristic of chewing.

    The teeth are located both in the upper and lower parts of the mouth, and are complementary to allow a good closure of the mouth and to allow better chewing.

    The mouth is the gateway of the digestive system, because it is through the oral cavity that we introduce food into the body and begin to digest it, through chewing and the secretion of the first enzymes present in saliva. The mouth is also the organ through which the sense of taste is expressed, directly related to the act of nutrition, and it is an important organ for both breathing and phonation. Saliva is a hyperosmotic fluid secreted by the salivary glands located in the oral cavity. Like all secretions, saliva is also predominantly water (99%), while only 1% is inorganic and organic substances. Among the inorganic substances, we find mainly mineral salts, in particular chlorides and bicarbonate, potassium and calcium. The organic fraction is instead represented by enzymes (amylase, mucin, lysozyme) and immunoglobulins. Salivary secretion is entrusted to several glands: 60% is produced by the submandibular glands, 30% by the parotid glands and 5% by the sublingual glands. There are also minor salivary glands (5%).

    The amount of saliva produced by the parotids strongly increases as a result of strong stimulation. The fluid secreted by the salivary glands does not always have the same characteristics: the parotid glands secrete a more fluid saliva rich in ptyalin; the submandibular
