He previously taught at Marquette University and William Jewell College after receiving his PhD in physics from Washington University in St. Louis.     Everyone has different ways of coping with stress. Some people choose to hide and cry in a corner; others try to battle their way through difficult situations; and yet others have a tendency to freeze up and keep everything bottled up inside until it finally explodes. What's important to realize is that when under pressure, your body automatically prompts you to make the correct choice so that you can get out of there without getting hurt, and that's true no matter how you choose to handle such a circumstance.

    It's common for those who select fight to have their blood pushed to their muscles, making them ready for action in any situation; this is where the expression red-faced reaction originates. Conversely, those who aren't used to defending themselves against the source of the disturbance will likely have their bodies shut down, rendering them speechless and mute.

    Unhealthy coping mechanisms are techniques that we've learned to deal with stress when we have no other options. To relax and de-stress, we could occasionally go out for a smoke or a few drinks. Unfortunately, it is all too easy for these types of coping methods to become addictions that further complicate our ability to deal with the challenges we face on a daily basis.

    If you're having a difficult day, it doesn't make sense to medicate yourself with alcohol, which might make you feel even worse in the long run.
