Calm Within - Bruno Chiu
Chapter 1 - Introduction
These days, it seems like almost everyone complains about feeling stressed. It's become a common topic of conversation that we use to describe the pressures we face in our careers and personal lives. Surprisingly, even children are experiencing stress, sometimes due to their home or school environments, often inherited from their parents.
Psychologists studying stressed individuals attribute this situation to various factors, ranging from our diet to the demands of our society. Many agree that people today take on too much and end up burning themselves out.
While stress is a normal part of life, there's a difference between experiencing stress in specific situations and constantly feeling overwhelmed. Major disruptions can cause stress, but most people recover once the situation is resolved or given enough time.
On the other hand, some individuals seem to be stressed out all the time, which is unhealthy and detrimental to our society. Every year, billions of dollars are spent on treating the symptoms of stress, and numerous prescription medications are available for stress and anxiety. Millions of people rely on these medications to cope with their stress levels.
What has happened over the past three decades that has turned us into a nation of stressed-out individuals? Are societal expectations too high, or are we placing unrealistic demands on ourselves? Why are so many people now dealing with anxiety disorders, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, depression, and panic attacks? These conditions were relatively unknown years ago, but now they are commonly discussed in magazines and the media. Depression and anxiety often go hand in hand and are closely tied to stress.
Pharmaceutical companies are constantly developing new antidepressant medications, claiming they are superior to the ones discovered just a year ago. Thirty years ago, the term antidepressant
was unheard of; it would have been associated with something related to cars rather than mental health. Nowadays, it feels like almost everyone you meet is taking something for stress, depression, or anxiety, all of which can be traced back to stress.
Stress is typically the underlying cause of these psychological disorders and also has physical effects. It has been linked to various diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Clearly, it's not good for our well-being to be constantly under stress. However, as human beings, we will inevitably face stressful situations. The key is learning how to identify stressors, eliminate unnecessary stressors from our lives, and develop healthy ways to cope with stressful situations.
If you're feeling stressed out like millions of others, it's important to examine the reasons behind your stress and take steps to reduce it. If you continue to feel overwhelmed, you might find yourself
