Chapter 2 – The Age of Anxiety
We find ourselves in a challenging and turbulent era, where things don't seem to be getting any easier. Life can sometimes feel incredibly painful and unfair, yet somehow we muster the strength to persevere day after day, holding onto the hope that things will improve.
However, it's hard to ignore the fact that the world is growing increasingly chaotic and uncertain, not to mention stressful. The feeling of safety seems to have evaporated from our grasp. Millions of people are drowning in unprecedented levels of debt, while others are losing their jobs, homes, and even their physical and mental well-being. Worry, depression, and anxiety have unfortunately become all too familiar in far too many lives.
Welcome to the Age of Anxiety, a term coined by Time magazine back in 2002. The constant stress and uncertainties of living in the 21st century have taken a toll on us, leading many to live in a perpetual state of fear and worry. Even four years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, people still harbor deep-seated fears of another catastrophic event occurring, perhaps in their own vicinity.
Whether we turn on the news or open a newspaper, we are bombarded with distressing images and stories that make us question our safety and well-being. In this information age, we have unparalleled access to an overwhelming amount of data, adding to our concerns.
The economy itself serves as another significant stressor. Our country is burdened by debt, and so are many individuals. Soaring gas prices, exorbitant housing costs, and even the rising expense of food have forced countless Americans into unfulfilling and monotonous jobs, where they toil solely for a paycheck. Today, the priority seems to be bringing home the bacon rather than pursuing a dream career.
The increasing number of women in the workforce has also contributed to the mounting stress. Many women feel the pressure to be everything to everyone, juggling roles as breadwinners, housekeepers, mothers, wives, daughters, and siblings. However, in doing so, they often neglect to allocate time for themselves, leading to soaring stress levels.
Even children are not immune to the pressures of stress and anxiety. Teenagers aspiring to attend college find themselves pushing their limits academically, striving to obtain scholarships due to the ever-increasing tuition costs. On top of that, they often find themselves working part-time jobs to afford extras that their parents can no longer provide. Peer pressure further adds to this already intense mix, creating a veritable pressure cooker.
