    Chapter 1 – Introduction

    The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.

    - William James

    Each day it seams as though there are more and more reasons to be stressed out. We can find stress at work, at home, in the car, at the doctor's office, and some many other places.  Stress is at epidemic levels. However, before we can talk about healing stress, we must understand what stress is.

    When we talk about stress, we really should talk about the stress response. The stress response is an evolved survival mechanism in our autonomic nervous system. Our autonomic nervous system receives input or information from our senses and our conscious mind and it has to make split-second decisions about whether we are safe or under threat from harm.

    If the decision is under threat, the autonomic nervous system activates the stress response, otherwise known as the fight or flight response. This response can happen so quickly, even before you are even consciously aware that there is a threat present. As a result, the body is prepared, through nervous and hormonal mechanisms to deal with a threat, which can be real or imagined.

    While stress can motivate us to to take action when we face real harm, stress can also cause terrible damage to our overall health if it becomes chronic. That's why it is critical to relieve it immediately.

    Life is full of problems, negative people, difficult situations, and unexpected events. Everyone experiences these from time-to-time. But it is the way you perceive and respond to life's challenges that can lead to either great
