In Life There Is a Way!: If You Believe
()
About this ebook
From losing her father at a young age, to learning important life lessons from her disabled sister, Smith tells how she makes her relationship with God a priority and how she’s grown through prayer.
In this memoir, Smith chronicles how she had a reason to give up, but she refused. Staying connected to God is the answer. She thanks God each day for everything—for the things he’s done and things he’s going to do.

Chapter 1: Oh No! My Sister Is Disabled
GettyImages-603864970.jpgMommy, mommy, why is my sister not talking to me? Mommy, why is my sister in that big stroller? Hey Mommy, why are you feeding my sister? She’s a big girl. Can’t she feed herself?
Yep, you got it right. These are all the questions that I didn’t quite understand at four years old. You see, I was confused and full of questions. It wasn’t until I was five years old that I thought, Oh no! My sister is disabled.
I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard of Rett syndrome, but it is a disorder that occurs mostly in girls, affecting their ability to talk, walk, and function properly. Some even have seizures, have difficulty breathing, and take lots of medications. I should know, because my sister was diagnosed with Rett syndrome. Truthfully, it is not easy to deal with at all.
So, you probably think that my sister is on a ventilator, has a tracheostomy tube and a feeding tube, and looks kind of weird. Well, that’s where you’re wrong! My sister, NaColby Jennings, is not on a ventilator and has neither a tracheostomy tube nor a feeding tube. Colby doesn’t look weird either (not trying to be rude). Colby is very beautiful, smart, and fun to be around. However, my sister can’t walk or talk, which is not easy to deal with for anyone. Nevertheless, I thank God that Colby doesn’t have to take any medication, is still able to eat by mouth, and does not have seizures. My mom told me she used to have seizures when she was younger, but God healed her from them. I am glad that he did, because I don’t know if I could have handled that part of her life. Then again, who knows?
• Inspirational Moment: It’s very hard to have a family member with a disability. You must have patience and special love. I encourage people who have sisters or brothers like my sister to find a way to accept them the way they are, because they deserve love too. And God will bless you. Yes, it is hard, but in life, there is a way! I keep my faith and hope in the Lord, and each day becomes a better day. We are all faced with different challenges in life. Some may seem unbearable, but God will see you through. He never puts more on us than we can handle.
• Writing and exercising are the ways that I express my feelings about things. I encourage you to find positive ways to express your feelings as you face different challenges in life.
• Take time out for yourself and relax. It will get better if you believe.
Colby is an incredibly fun, cool, and unique sister to have. What makes Colby so cool and fun is that I get to make up all the rules, and she never complains. Another reason is that my sister never argues with me over who goes first. She laughs at all my jokes and keeps all my secrets to herself. Whenever I feel sad, she even rubs my face to let me know it will be OK. I love my sister and thank God for her every day. Colby’s smile brings sunshine to a dark room.
However, I truly believe that if it weren’t for our amazing mother, Deborah, Colby’s life would be different. My mother is a strong, spiritual woman of God who refuses to settle for less. For example, my mother was told by someone (who I will not put on blast in this book) that she would not be able to make it with a disabled daughter. This person even told my mom that she would not be able to hold a nine-to-five job unless she put my sister in a facility. She was told that she might as well apply for government housing and accept the fact that her life was
