    My Story

I grew up as a child with my mother and father living separately. I remember when I was five years old having a mother that was there for me, but somewhere down the line that changed. I became a foster child lost in the system. My mom was in and out of jail. I barely saw my dad, and when I did the time with him was very short. I remember me and my sister being dropped off at my foster parents’ home and not seeing my mother often. The days I didn’t see her turned into weeks, then months, then years.

I did not understand what was going on. I was the oldest. We lived in our guardian’s home till I was either 11 or 12 years old. There were a least eight to nine people already in the home, and when me and my sister came it made it 12 . Unfortunately, everyone treated my sister better than me. I remember going to bed hungry sometimes, even though there wasn’t a lack of food. I remember sleeping on the porch in the cold because I wet the bed, and was given no cover. I remember times where my baby sister would check on me to see if I was okay. I was the oldest; I should have been protecting her and making sure she was okay. Regardless, neither one of us should’ve had that responsibility. We were only kids.

As a kid I remember getting held down and getting beat with water hoses and extension cords.I sometimes would ask for something to eat and I was denied. I was also put to work at a young age, pulling weeds out of flower beds, working fields in the hot sun... we also had a tree that grew pecans. Whenever I got a chance I would gather as many as I could to eat, because I didn't know if I was going to get something to eat that day. Enter school. I loved going to school, as this was where I would get most of my meals. I never missed school and was never late. I made sure that I ate breakfast and lunch. I would ask kids during lunch time and breakfast if they were going to eat all of their food. The reason again was to make sure I could get as much as I could now, because I knew I wouldn’t have the option later. I would eat all of my food and others peoples’ food.

They would call me ‘eat it up em.’ LOL! They knew if they did not want whatever it was they had, they could give it to me. My favorite thing was cornbread, which is still a favorite of mine today. Even though I got good meals at school, other aspects of school were not so successful. I did not know how to act, nor did I know how to add, take tests, and make good grades. In Alabama, the grading scale was A to E. I remember my first report card. I made straight E’s. I failed everything. Again, I did not have a mother or father or foster parent who really cared about my life. When I took that report card
