From Hopeless and Helpless to Healing

Our story involves autism and the devastation that its diagnoses brings with it. I dont think we can ever be prepared to hear a doctor tell us that our precious child has something wrong, but when we are told that the medical community does not know what causes the disease and there is absolutely no cure, we find ourselves left with nothing to hold onto. I have never, in my entire life, felt so hopeless and helpless. What were we going to do? How would we overcome this life sentence that our precious little boy had been given? How would we cope with all that lay ahead? Thus began an amazing journey, and through the love of my son and my precious little grandson, I began a faith walk with God that would take me down paths that I never could have imagined. Even today, no one is more surprised that I could overcome so much, so easily and with the joy and peace that fills my life. God has brought me and my family this far, but I believe our story has not ended, it has only just begun.

Brenda Walker Kirkland is a first time author living in Mobile, Alabama. She has since remarried and is presently estranged from the Walker family and sees the children only on birthdays and holidays. She still holds to her faith for her grandson's continued healing of autism.

DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, who have sustained me through all of the trials and sorrows with which I have dealt. Without His help, not only would I have been unable to survive, I would not have this wonderful story of love and faith through adversity to share with others. He has been with me throughout the writing of this book, giving me the words and providing comfort to me as I relived all of the events that led us to where we are today. I pray our story will be a blessing to others who find themselves in helpless and hopeless situations, and that they may also begin a faith walk with God that will see them through to victory through Jesus Christ

FORWARD

When I first felt that I should write this book, I wasn’t sure if it was really God directing me to do so or perhaps just my own desire to tell the story of my son, his son and the awesome path of their lives. I told the story to so many people and invariably, each person would comment on what a powerful testimony it was, and that I should consider writing a book so that others could also be inspired. I prayed to God for direction and to be shown a sign if He really was the driving force behind my thoughts of writing, since I had no experience in writing, and had never, even in my wildest dreams, thought about writing a book.

Since I had no computer in my home, my prayer was for Him to provide one for me, since I would certainly need one in order to write an entire book. I asked my oldest son if he could suggest a dealer where I might purchase a used, older computer for my writing, and he advised that we had a new one at the office, but it was not working properly. I then asked what would be required in order to make the computer operational, and he said it would require him to work via the telephone with the support staff for possibly several hours in order to bring the computer back up. Knowing how busy he was at work, I quickly dismissed the idea of this computer and continued with my plan to just buy a used one. However, God had a plan of His own.

Several days passed and I forgot all about the computer, but when I arrived at work one morning, my son excitedly told me that he had checked the computer to see if he could detect what needed to be done, and to his surprise, it immediately came up and worked perfectly. He said he didn’t know what had happened, but I was sure I knew, and I further knew that God had, indeed, answered my prayer and had ordained the writing of this book. So, here I am, sitting at my miracle computer. I pray, as you read, you will feel the love in our story and the title will manifest itself in your life and the lives of your family so that you, too, may go From Hopeless and Helpless to Healing.

INTRODUCTION

As I begin my story, it is hard to know exactly where to start because I want you to know me, my son and his son and the inspiring story that our lives tell, but most importantly, I want you to know God and what He can and will mean in your life, no matter what you or a loved one may be facing.
