Introduction
To those of you who have never been through a difficult event or a dark valley, this book might not be of any interest to you. However, I believe that most of us have experienced some degree of difficulty at some time in our lives. I would ask that you read this book and try to relate to the hurt and frustration this family felt due to a child with autism. Imagine, if you can, dealing with this illness and really not knowing what to do... Imagine, if you can, the looks and whispers of people that cut so deep. I wish I could say I knew how Jerry Gowen and his family felt. This would not be true; the truth is I didn't fully understand these families' struggles until I read the draft. This book is a wonderful testimony to faith, love, and a God given strength to help us through difficult times. Lesser men might have given up and simply left their family. Looking back on this story I felt a great deal of remorse because I simply didn't understand. Jerry has been a co-worker and friend of mine. We have talked many times about his personal struggle dealing with his son Luke. Today Luke is a different child. Today Jerry and Melina are different people. This is not to say their struggles were easy; they were not. At the end of this book I hope you will find a success story of how one family dealt with autism, and overcame their dark valley. At the end of this book I hope you will find a family that turned despair to joy at seeing their son, Luke become a child that is succeeding in life. At the end of this book I hope you look inside and strive to help someone else with their struggles of life. At the end of this book I hope you will look beyond the easy in life and try to help someone who is faced with adversity and things that are hard to understand.
