The Bully and My BIG Brother

Another school day walking the same way I always walk. I left a little earlier this morning hoping I will not run into anyone. That anyone in particular, is someone especially. It was not easy getting out of the house either. Mom was asking all types of questions about why I was leaving thirty minutes early? Why don’t you have breakfast? Where is your backpack? How come you’re not waiting on your best friend, Jeremy? Moms can ask more questions than a private detective. In fact, sometimes I think she is one; a detective I mean. Like the way she can find things not meant for her to find or know. Moms we cannot live without them, but this morning I wish mine was anywhere else but here so I would not have to hear all these questions.

I have to remain focused to make sure I am not seen or heard. If this works, then I will be the happiest 8th grader in town. I cannot afford to get to deep in thought and not be aware of my surroundings. I really liked the assembly we had at school yesterday targeting the bullying epidemic. They gave a lot of good information, but they don’t know what it is like here at our school. There are a few of them; bullies, I mean, boys and girls alike. They tell us to tell an adult and don’t walk along- yeah ‘use the buddy system’. Our friends are all equally afraid. They say we have protection, just tell the administrators.

The presenters must not know the administrators we have. They are just as afraid to go to their cars after school as we are to get on our busses or walk home. Our administrators and teachers seem to believe in keeping that buddy system enforced among themselves too. It is almost funny to see how they wait at each other’s classrooms to have someone to walk to the parking lots with them. If there is no one to walk with them, they summon the security guard to accompany them. And, they want us to feel protected by them? Ha! That is funny!

Well I can see the school I have almost made it without… Oh no, whose voice is that I hear up there? What is he laughing at? His back is turned, and I am so close maybe he will stay involved in what ever he is doing and I can pass without him noticing me. If mom knew what I had to go through every day she would have all her questions answered. I cannot carry a backpack because it weighs me down and holds me back and he always wants to see what is in it. He never asks he just snatches it and looks in for anything he may want. Then she would understand why I had to leave early this morning and why I could not wait on anyone. I will call home later and ask her to bring my backpack and lunch money. She’s great like that. She will probably ask again, and this time she’ll want an explanation for why I left so early. Later for that, I cannot concentrate on that right now.

Darn! He sees me, and there is no one around. Well one thing so far is he has never hit me. He just bullies me with his words. That is the one thing I fear, is him hitting me. It is bad enough that I allow him to intimidate me with words. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on myself my friends are scared too. In fact, one of my friends has wet himself. Another was so paralyzed he froze when all the bully did was approach him. Yet everyone has big words and plans of what to do the next time the bully even thinks about touching one of us.

Oh God, he is turning around. Yep he sees me. For some reason he does not do me like he has done so many others, he just likes to say threatening things to me and take what is mine, but he has never laid me out. I pray he continues keeping his hands off me. If only I could just get enough courage to stand up to him! If only my words left my mouth with confidence in my voice! I do try to resist him with saying some things, but
