THE INDOLENT LATINO
IDEOLOGICAL CHARACTER OF LATIN AMERICAN FATALISM
1. The fatalistic syndrome
1.1. The Latin American torpor
The author begins by recalling the novels of Gabriel García Márquez. In them there is a very widespread READING CONVENTION that refers to the CHARACTER OF LATIN AMERICAN SOCIETIES. Martín-Baró affirms that although the image of Latin America that appears there is a literary fiction, it is still marked by important elements of reality.
The most important of these elements of the Latin American reality is the idea that these peoples live something like a "forced siesta". LATIN AMERICANS are SUBJECTS SUBJECTED BY PROCESSES MANAGED BY OTHERS, by factors totally external to their will. This state is experienced in a SEMI-CONSCIOUSNESS that is expressed from time to time through PREDICTABLE OUTBREAKS OR SURPRISES.
This situation gives an APPARENT HISTORICAL STAGING in which the events are perceived as something unchangeable; they are the same in the past, in the present and will be in the future.

The most important of these elements of the Latin American reality is the idea that these peoples live something like a forced siesta
1.1. fatalism
FATALISM is a CONCEPTION that implies TWO ASPECTS:
Idea of an INEVITABLE FUTURE
Feeling that what is coming is BAD AND UNFORTUNATE
FATALISM is an ATTITUDE OF LIFE, a WAY OF LOCATED marked by RESIGNATION and CONFORMISM. The most common FATALISTIC IDEAS are:
Each individual brings a WRITTEN DESTINY in his life. This is already DEFAULT
Individuals can do nothing to modify this destiny
The destiny of each one of the individuals is attributed to a FAR AWAY AND ALMIGHTY GOD who is useless to oppose
The most frequent EMOTIONS or AFFECTS in fatalism are:
We must ACCEPT THE DESTINY that touches us WITHOUT RESENTMENT OR REBELLION
It makes no sense to experience great emotions (being happy or very sad) in the face of the normal and natural course of life
SUFFERING is the normal state of life
From here it turns out that the most frequent BEHAVIORS are:
Conformity and submission
Passivity before the facts of life
REDUCTION of life time TO THE PRESENT. The only thing that counts is the here and now, both for good and for evil
From this panorama, Martín-Baró thinks that a STEREOTYPICAL IMAGE OF THE LATIN AMERICAN REALITY is formed.
This is expressed through CULTURAL GUIDELINES that have found great diffusion in some GENERAL TYPES
. For example, the wasteful and
