Sunny The Sunbeam’s Story
I am Sunny. I was born a nonmagic mortal. I have magic and immortality now. I have straight black hair, light but deeply tanned skin, and yellowish eyes. Many years ago, I was born to a couple slaves. Master was kind but firm. Seven years pass with me as only a slave. I expected nothing more from my life then to serve others without pay. One day master calls me and my parents to his office.
Then master states, I am sending Sunny on a task. He will be gone for a couple months. I respect that parents want to be sure their children are safe, so I am letting you know.
He dismisses my parents. Then once they are back at work he says, Sunny deliver a note to my cousin, a month foot travel from here. Come right back afterwards. You work hard so I trust that you will return.
Master hands me the note, describes how to get there, tells me who to ask for, gives me enough food to get there and sends me on my way. I travel for a week and then realize I have not seen a landmark I was told to turn at. I look around and don’t recognize anything. I am lost. I did not mean to get lost. How will I do as I was told to? I am in a forest and decide that I need to at least try to get to where I need to be. I pick a random direction and walk that way for as long as I can before it gets too dark to see. I eat in the dark and go to sleep.
The next day I wake up as soon as light reaches through the trees and eat hurried then continue walking. I come across some water. I see a sun drawing on a rock near the edge. I touch it then drink from the water. I whisper, Wellspring. This place is a wellspring.
I know I am a king now and can travel using the sun or in the sun’s light. I don’t go to the sun as I am still owned by another, how I hate slavery, at least I have a kind master. So, sense sun-travel is not an option I do sun-navigate instead. I look towards the sun and closing my eyes I run from one spot where some sunlight hits the ground to another. I just run that way. Three weeks later I look down and open my eyes as I heard people near. I am approaching a town. I enter the town and go right to the house I was told to and knock.
A woman answers asking, Can I help you?
She looks at my slave chains really hard. I say, Master sent me on a task. I was told to ask to speak with mistress Olive.
The door is closed, and I wonder if I found the right place. I wait, as a slave I have experienced many slamming doors, and this is expected. Three minutes later I am shown into a room. Though there is furniture I don’t sit. I won’t disrespect miss Olive whoever she is. I am not an invited guest, just a slave on a task.
Two minutes later a young girl enters the room and says, Olive might be a few minutes. Are you loyal to your master?
I know somehow that this girl, just a year younger than I am is truly Olive. Don’t ask me how I knew that as I am not sure myself. Must be my magic picks up on things most couldn’t know. I decide to go with her act as if I did not know as we had never meant questioning, Why ask?
She replies, Why did you come here? You could have run away.
I reply, Thievery is very wrong. Master is kind and I know there are those that treat their slaves worse. I am fine.
She asks, What is your name?
I reply, Sunny.
Olive says, I am Ollie. Nice to meet you Sunny.
I say, Miss.
Then one of her help comes in and shoos her out. After she leaves with an act of disappointment the help says, Miss Olive is not able to get away at this time and asks why you are here.
I say, Master sent his cousin a note.
Placing the note down, I say, If she needs to send a reply, I will wait for it. However, I am expected back and can’t stay long.
The servant picks up the note and walks out. Ten minutes later the servant comes back in and says, She wants you to take the reply to her cousin.
She places down a note and I pick it up and then am shown out. I get away from the house a couple blocks and Olive comes over to me. Olive asks, Will we see each other again Sunny?
I reply, Not sure miss.
Olive says, I miss having others near my age come there. I hope you come back, that is if your master lets you.
We reach the edge of the town and I leave her and walk toward home. She goes back into the town. Once away from the people I sun-navigate. I reach home as the scheduled time master gave me. Approaching the plantation, I open my eyes and walk into it normal. My parents see me, and I see their smiles. I wave slightly and go check in with my master.
He questions, Did you do as I asked?
I say, Yes sir. She sent this back to you.
Then I place down the note. He has me wait there while he opens it and reads it. Then he says, She says that you meant Ollie. Did you care for Ollie?
I say, Sir, it matters not. If you have me go there again, I might see her and if not then I must be fine with that.
Being dismissed I return to my parents. A month later, Olive arrives with a couple of female servants and their husbands. Master shows her around as a friend of his named Ollie, so the act continues hum. She acts as if she stays where she must then as soon as she can do so without causing questions about it comes over to me and says, Nice to see you Sunny.
I reply, Miss.
She starts helping me with my task and I move away from her. I don’t want either of us punished. She sighs and says
