Falling Star - Emily Sych
1
The comet was to pass Earth at midnight. Still nobody thought of it. People were out there videoing the comet. It was only going to come once in anybody’s life.
So everybody was watching it. And when it collided with a star and made that giant explosion, people thought it was the end of the world. They saw the star shooting down as it hit Earth’s atmosphere. Then it hit Earth with such force it caused the whole Earth to shake. Any stronger, it would have caused the end of the Earth.
Cracks full of lava opened up and hell was revealed. I learned that long ago. I also learned who I am, for the first time in my life.
I am the Star.
My name is Sitara but I don’t have a last name. I should never have got a last name. It only meant the death of my parents.
I had gotten home from school with my adopted sister. We were chatting.
I went outside to feed the cat when she backed away hissing. It was weird because this cat only did the nicest things.
What’s wrong, Buttercup?
I asked. I reached out to pet it and it scratched me.
I pulled my hand away with a flash of white. Buttercup hissed again and ran off.
I stared after her, and then at my hand. It oozed blood.
I walked back in the house. I got so far when the door slammed behind me.
I whirled around and realized it was just the wind. What else could it be? The hair on the back of my neck was standing.
I walked into the living room where my parents were watching the TV.
I noticed there was red splattered all over the screen. The Blair Witch Project, again?
I asked.
All of a sudden I saw, in my parent’s chairs were their dead bodies. Their hearts had been ripped from their chest. They looked blindly at the ceiling.
I covered my mouth. I started to scream.
I dashed for the door, hearing someone behind me. I threw open the door, ran through, and then quickly slammed it. I heard someone cry out and I guessed I smashed his hand in the door.
I ran down the hill from our house. I could see a shadow from up the hill, a lot of shadows, chasing me.
I jumped into the middle of the road. A police cruiser just happened to be coming by.
I stood in the road and the police cruiser halted. The men coming down the hill sensed they were to lose me and sped up.
I threw open the door. Go!
I shouted. Without any problem we sped up.
In the rearview mirror, I could see the men, shaking their fists in anger. Their fists were all bloody. But the weirdest thing was that when one was almost hit by a car, it passed through him.
The police didn’t find their bodies. They never did.
They insisted on taking me into an adoption center. I didn’t like it. So I ran away. No more would anyone get hurt.
That was three years ago. But I learned to make a schedule. I would stay in one place for a few months, to make sure nobody found me. Then I would change my name and anything else I could change. It was the same each time.
I tried never to get fond of a place, or of any people. If I did, they would die.
So I learned to hate almost everyone.

I go to the small town of Mitchell, Indiana, home of Gus Grissom, one of the original Mercury astronauts. He had been in space so he saw my family. I wonder what it was like.
I got a home. It wasn’t that bad, I couldn’t stick out.
I went to school at Mitchell Junior High School, home of the Mitchell blue-jackets.
My first day of school and I was walking through the halls with no idea where to go.
New kid?
someone asked from behind me. I wiped my bangs from my face.
Is it noticeable?
I asked. He just smiled.
Principal’s office is around the corner.
I just smiled. Thanks,
I said and walked away. I walked into the office.
In the principal’s room I heard him yelling at some poor kid. I started to get a weird feeling here. Should I run for it?
The door opened and I knew it was too late. The principal and the student came out. They were both red, one of embarrassment and one of anger.
Oh no
he groaned. Not another one.
I’m the new girl, Sitara Leanne.
Yes, I sometimes use my real name, but I change the last name.
Oh yes, Sitara, I have high expectations for you.
he said scanning me.
I bet you do, sir.
I said respectfully.
Do you address most people like that?
he asked studying me again trying to see what I was pulling.
Yes, Sir, it was how I was raised,
I answered.
Understandable, I like it. Where are your parents?
he asked.
They are out of town at the moment,
I said, wishing he hadn’t brought it up. He nodded, not bringing up anything else, thankfully. He showed me to my first class where he announced my arrival.
Most girls would be blushing. Not me, I went through three years of this. I learned to get used to it.
I get seated in and I feel people staring at me. I guess I look different. Everyone here is tan. I am not. In all my travels, I never get tanned. I also have bright blonde hair and brilliant violet eyes with golden specks.
My eyes are what are amazing, and what
