Ninth King of the Empire
I, Sam Peacemaker, a female king of the immortal empire, a magic empire, realize the kings have great sway on who else comes into the king’s rank. I walk through one land. It is nonmagic, but there are magics that live there. I see a girl get attacked. The one attacking her draws a sword. Another girl about the same age shouts No!
just before the one would have killed the nonmagic child. The phoenix bird protects the child by melting the sword. Interesting. Only those who have the phoenix rank can summon the bird.
I am confused though. The child that called the phoenix is not even an immortal, so how could she have done so? Both girls pass out. The ancient fire sphinx walks up and picks up the girl that had summoned the phoenix (that bird is hers by right) and says in fire language, King, my child would be able to call for the help if she needed it. I do not know who the other girl is, but please protect her as she is important to my daughter.
I nod and say in fire language, I wondered how she managed to call the phoenix to her. Family would be able to do so. Her friend will be safe. Where should I meet you?
She replies, still in fire language, The family I placed my daughter with lives three days outsiders’ travel west of here. I am taking her there.
I reply in fire language, Her friend and family will join them then.
She replies in fire language, Thank you, King. I know they will be safe then. My name is Brandi-Phoenix.
I smile and say in fire language, Now I have right to address you so.
I pick up the child that had been attacked and call out plainly, Her entire family is no longer safe here. I will take them to where they would be safe. Do they trust me enough to come to me?
A woman steps out of the crowd and comes over. Two small children are following her. The children are twins, one male and one female. The woman says, I am her mother, and these are my other children. Why would that firebird appear in front of my daughter?
I reply, Her friend called it to protect her. It did as one commanded it to. Not many can even summon it to protect themselves. Where is your husband?
She replies, At work. He won’t be off till late.
I say, He needs to come now. I will not stay here much longer and will not come back. If he does not come, he won’t see any of you again.
The woman tells her son to get his papa and tell him it is urgent.
I say, Child, the firebird will protect you if you ask. Hurry along.
The boy takes off running and is back in ten minutes with his father.
The man says, What is so urgent, Annie?
The woman replies, I do not know how to explain.
I say, I know. Your daughter’s friend protected your daughter from being killed. However, how she did so puts all your lives in danger. We all leave this land now, never to return. Sir, take hold of your wife’s hand and your son’s hand. Miss, take hold of your mother’s other hand then grab me. Do not let go. We will create a fire chain. The firebird will remove us from this land.
Though confused, they do as I say. The phoenix bird flies down, stopping inches from me. The young girl starts to move back. I say, Miss, the firebird is here to help. It won’t hurt any of us. Are you too afraid to travel that way?
The child replies, It melted a sword. How could it be safe?
I reply, It is not safe unless one has the marking of its name or is with one that does. As long as the fire chain is not broken, we are all safe. Just keep a hold of me, young one.
Annie says, What would happen if we let go?
I reply, It can melt a sword not even touching it. Do you really wish to know that kind of pain?
The phoenix circles around us. Soon we are on its back and high enough to not be seen where we go. It drops us off just past the sight of anyone where we are headed. I say, We just covered three days’ journey in ten minutes. I know your daughter’s friend lives in the land we are close to. They will travel with us also. Not safe to stay here either, too close to where you just left. Come, we will get them and travel on.
The girl child says, Miss, is it safe to let go of you now?
I say, Yes, but you all need to stay close. I need to know that she is safe, and her family also. I will lead you all to where you will be safe.
The girl says, Miss, might I know your name?
I reply, I am named Sam. What is your name?
She replies, My name is Renay. My twin is named Ross. Sister’s name is Rosela, though she has started asking us to call her Fire-Rose instead. I do not know why she wishes to be called that.
I ask, What is her friend’s name?
Renay replies, She told us her name was Phoenisis and that it meant ‘fire birdie.’ Why would someone name their child that?
I laugh and say, Because she is. She is the one that called the firebird to protect your sister. It is why all your lives are now in danger. As to why she would be named that, it is that she has control of the firebird.
We go into the town. Brandi-Phoenix is there waiting. She says, Good, they are safe.
I reply, Naturally. So show us the family that has Phoenisis. I will lead them all to someplace safe.
Brandi-Phoenix says, I can’t show you. I had someone else chose her family. I stopped at this spot and have not tried to find her. I only went there as the summoning happened. When I got back here, I stopped. Please, I do not know how her family looks yet, only that the one that took her to them in the first place could lead us there. I waited here for you. As much as I wanted to meet them and thank them, I knew you needed to know where to go also, so I waited for you.
I introduce those with me then ask, So who carried Phoenisis to her family?
Brandi-Phoenix replies, Your Little Rose.
I laugh and say, My Little Rose has never been able to hide from me. Come.
I lead them to Phoenisis and the family she was placed with. The sun is setting as I knock.
The man of the house answers. He asks, Can I help you?
I reply, Non, I am here to help you and your family. You all are in danger. Phoenisis sleeps still, yes? I know she does. Until you all are safe, she will sleep. We need to leave, and the sooner the better.
He says, Why should we trust you?
I say, Phoenisis knows me. Has she ever told you the meaning of her name?
He says, My wife never told me why she gave our daughter that name or its meaning.
Brandi-Phoenix says, Sir never knew? No, couldn’t have. I thought your wife might have told you. Phoenisis is not related to either of you. She was hours old when she was placed in your care alongside the child that is yours. They act as sisters, yes?
His wife has come to the door and asks, How did you know that?
Brandi-Phoenix says, Miss, I am Phoenisis’s mother. I asked a friend to find her a family that would keep her safe and raise her as their own till I knew she would always be safe. I am glad you were able to do that for me. However, now all your lives are in danger and we are losing valuable time. Must get your entire family away from this place before morning.
A young girl walks to the door and says, Mama, why does Red Tulip not wake up? I am scared, Mommy.
Brandi-Phoenix says, Are you talking about Phoenisis, child?
The girl replies, Yes, her. I can’t say her name, so she told me I could call her that.
Brandi-Phoenix pales.
I ask, Ancient, what is wrong?
Brandi-Phoenix replies, The three are never apart. The Red Tulip, Fire Rose, and the one that has the name of Red Lilic. Sam, they are never apart. We have to find the third before anyone else does. They hold a unique treasure between them. If one is killed, the others would die within hours. We must find the Red Lilic.
I say, How about help? Unless you have some idea where to look.
Brandi-Phoenix replies, Not willing to let most know I have a daughter.
I ask, So how about the empire’s eight kings?
Brandi-Phoenix replies, The nine kings of the empire and the other ancients are all I would tell.
I say, Nine?
Brandi-Phoenix replies, The three only show up if nine kings exist. We may not know where the ninth one is or who is the ninth yet, but that one exists.
I say, So how about the ancients and the empire’s kings?
She nods. I call out, Ancients respected by the entire empire and the kings of the empire, I ask for your help.
They all show up. Kar asks, So why call us, Sam?
I reply, I need to find the one that goes by the name Red Lilic. May or may not be sleeping as this child is.
Brandi-Phoenix says, Sir, my daughter sleeps also. They won’t wake up unless all are safe. I do not know where to look.
Another ancient says, King Kar, we need to find the Red Lilic. The three red or fire flowers always form a triangle near or around the ninth king of the empire. They are not able to protect that one if any are killed or asleep.
Kar says, That is right. Thank you, Ancient Aniya, for reminding me of that. They always form a triangle close to or around the ninth king of the empire. Where was the child?
I reply, Three days east of here.
Kar says, Then we search within a radius of nine-day outsider travel of here. Sam, we will bring Red Lilic to you once you tell us you have found someplace safe for them to live. Do you know who the ninth king of the empire is or where that one is?
I reply, No, I do not know. It surprised me as much as the others to hear of a ninth.
Kar says, Do not doubt that it would. I never told any of you that I was not the firstborn Peacemaker.
The child that had
