The first week at primary school is challenging for any kid, but it was particularly worrying for me, because my Nana, who lived with us, had just been taken to hospital.
I was delighted when I woke up a few nights later to find her in my bedroom.
‘You’re back, Nana!’ I said, beaming.
She smiled at me, then gently rolled me over in bed and tickled my back.
I fell asleep with her watching over me.
The next morning, I hurried downstairs, expecting to see her in the kitchen – but she wasn’t there.
‘Where’s Nana?’ I asked Mum.
Mum’s eyes were red, as if she’d been crying.
