    The Wellspring of Magic

In the meantime, Queen Sam had gone to the wellspring of magic. She was the only one that knew where it was besides the Guardians. Most did not even care to try to find it. Sam had gone there twice before. She felt stronger there. This time, she carried her girl with her. After leaving the wellspring holding her daughter in her arms, she went to a human nation. She watched the people for a bit, then as sunset came on, she walked up to a girl of ten and said, Miss, see if your parents will invite a stranger in please.

The girl, Beth, had been out getting vases of water for her mother. She said, I will ask. She did and then came out and hurried Sam inside.

Sam said, Thank you for letting me come inside. I have traveled a ways.

The woman said, It is not safe to be outside at night. The king here puts anyone caught out at night in jail, no matter what. We have no idea what happens after that. Beth said that a stranger was asking to be invited in and that the stranger was female. I would not have invited a male in because the king sometimes disguises himself to catch people out at night. But he has never disguised himself as a female.

Sam said, I appreciate it. I was tired, but seeing you in pain makes me fully awake. Beth, please come here.

    Beth did so.

Sam said, I can help your mother, but I need my hands free. Hold out your arms and I will hand over what I hold.

Beth did as she was told. Sam placed her daughter in Beth’s arms and said, My daughter. She is happy with you. I know as she sleeps well.

Beth asked, What is her name?

Sam replied, I have not named her. She will choose her own name one day. So you can call her what you want to.

Beth said, Do you mind me calling her Ann?

Sam said, I don’t mind. She was rubbing the woman’s back and said, I am Sam.

The woman said, You mean Samantha?

Sam said, No. Sam—as in my parents named me Sam. I know it is a male name in most places, but the land where I am from has no gender differences in name, titles, or rank. Sometimes our king is a female. It is a unique land.

Beth asked, Can I see this land? I would enjoy learning more about it.

Sam smiled and said, You might get to one day. My daughter can find it. She already knows the way there.

The woman said, I am Anna. How could your daughter know the way there already? She is so young.

Sam replied, "She has the map. The ring that holds her family crest also holds a map. The necklace she has is her heritage, and she won’t remove it. She will always obey the laws of that land. They are what she knows. I am leaving my child in Beth’s care as Beth is a very responsible young lady. Beth, my child is a warrior. She will fight for what is right. She
