The Legends of Shantelli
Shamoon
Chapter One
The Tribe of the Swanii
I awoke just as the sun was beginning to rise. I had not slept very well, but that is the way it had been for the past month. Our tribe, The Swanii, was made up of about sixty huts. Yet, we were very small compared to the neighboring village. I had many things I wanted to do today. I looked at my mother with pleading eyes.
She said to me Okay, you can go. I think I can do your chores but, be back at noon Shamoon. Your father needs to talk to you,
Said my mother Naphiri.
Ok, I will,
I replied smiling.
I stepped outside into the bright sunlight. I had a few things planned to do today.
First, I headed toward the gigantic log building, which was to be the new temple for our village. The temple was for the Goddess of all the lands of Shantelli, Salas. It was so huge that it could probably hold ten huts inside it. As I walked towards it I saw many of our tribesman carrying logs and shaping the wood for the temple. I noticed my friend Braum was one of them. Braum and I had been friends since we were little children. Braum had dark brown eyes, medium brown hair and a medium built. He wasn’t the strongest of the young men in our village, but he was the gentlest, which was why I liked him so much. Braum saw me approaching and stopped dragging a heavy log to talk to me.
How is the building going on the new temple?
I asked Braum.
Fine, we are just about finished. I believe this temple will be the greatest tribute that Salas the Goddess of Shantelli has ever received,
Braum replied delighted in his work.
Yeah, it looks really good,
I said and smiled as I looked at the huge structure.
Yeah, it probably will be finished by tomorrow,
Braum said as he smiled back.
That’s good,
I replied.
Shamoon?
Said Braum.
Yes, Braum?
I said.
Um...Well we have been friends since forever and um...well... I was wondering if you wanted to eat with me today at noon?
said Braum as he began to go pale in the face.
Well... sure Braum I would love too,
I said happily.
Great see you at high noon,
Braum said as the color slowly began to come back to his face.
Ok see you then,
I replied as I walked away beaming.
As I began to walk away from the new temple I thought about Braum. Braum has been my friend forever and has always been there for me. Father had never liked Braum. He always told me that Braum was from the meti side of the tribe or bad blood. Father has always been so prideful of his direct heritage, I thought as I sighed. Soon I would be sixteen and have to be married and Braum was the only person that I had any feelings for. I must hope that my father will let us be together, I thought.
Yet, these problems weren’t the only ones on my mind. For the past month I had been dreaming of strange beasts. That is why I have hardly slept. Beasts that flew and breathed fire and… I told father of this when it first happened, but he told me that dreams were childish and to grow up. After that I haven’t discussed it with him. I needed to make these dreams stop so that’s why today I had decided to go see the village shaman Sapiri today and see if she could help me. I began the short walk over to her hut.
Chapter 2
Sapiri
As I approached Sapiri’s hut the smell of spices, herbs and other things I couldn’t distinguish lingered in the air. I slowly took a peek inside. All of a sudden I heard someone yell.
Shamoon! Nice to see you! Come on in!
yelled Sapiri.
Ok,
I said as I jumped from being surprised.
Wow she is loud, I thought. Sapiri was an older woman close to her 90th year in our tribe. She had extremely baggy skin. Her eyelids seemed to hide part of her dark blue eyes. Her Hair was long white and had bits of silver throughout it. Everyone in the tribe looked to her for guidance for many years, but recently people have said that she hasn’t been herself anymore. She sat on a small woven mat in the middle of the hut looking me over.
How’s your Father doing Shamoon?
said Sapiri.
Um...good,
I replied.
Would you like some toadstool soup? I just mixed up a fresh batch,
Said Sapiri motioning to a small black pot over a fire that looked like it was about to boil over.
No thanks Sapiri. I have come to ask some questions…
I began, but was interrupted.
Oh, the great Sapiri knows all. I know why you have come child,
Said Sapiri.
You do?
I asked.
Yes, let me get out my magic bones of seeing. Hmm. Here we go….
Said Sapiri as she threw the bones down on the floor.
You have come to ask about who you should marry?
said Sapiri.
Um...no,
I said.
You wanted to ask about your future? Right?
said Sapiri.
Um...no,
I said.
I know you want to know where I get my power from?
said Sapiri.
Um...no Sapiri, I...
I began to say as I was interrupted once again.
Fine, just tell me what you want?
Said Sapiri in an agitated tone.
Well... I have been having these horrible dreams... and
I stopped in mid-sentence
Sapiri’s eyes began to get hazy. They turned shiny like a bright silver color. Sapiri just sat there on her mat quietly.
Sapiri? Sapiri, are you ok?
I said concerned as I waved my hand in front of her.
A deep voice came out of Sapiri, Shamoon.
