Magic Always Has a Price - Rebecca Tran
Chapter 1
My name is Vasilisa Fenenko Danilovna, my friends call me Lisa. I’m a normal 21-year-old college student, or at least I was. You’re probably wondering why I say ‘was.’ It’s actually a long and very unbelievable story. Hell, I barely believe it, and I was ground zero. The only way for you to understand is to listen to my tale.
It all started last fall. I was a straight-A student at St. Louis University. The tuition was outrageous, so I had to maintain my grades to keep my scholarships. My parents were immigrants from Russia and had a rough time finding work. Unfortunately, their degrees meant little in the states. If I wanted a good education without running them into the poor house, I had to stay focused. I swore off men. I rarely went out with my friends either.
One weekend early in the semester my friend Ashley convinced me to go out to a bar near campus. It was a local hotspot for students and alumni. We were out early though, and the place wasn’t crowded. Ashley was annoyed she’d wanted to go out later for that very reason. An empty bar wasn’t a good place to meet people. I didn’t care. Men were of low priority.
I looked up from my meal when a rowdy group of guys walked in. They were talking, laughing, and teasing the waitress. I didn’t think anything of it. Ashley watched them though. She probably thought one of them was cute. I sighed and dropped my fry, Which one?
What do you mean which one? It’s half the soccer team, including Brad Ford.
Ashley nearly hissed at me before turning back to stare.
What’s the big deal?
I was so lost.
He’s team captain, not to mention majorly hot.
She moved her head to the left then right. There in the grey T-shirt.
I waited for Brad’s friend to move out of the way. I didn’t want to draw attention by craning my neck around to see him. His teammate leaned back in his seat revealing Brad. I couldn’t breathe. I never knew a man could do that? My whole world stood still for just a moment. I felt the tingle of warmth and anticipation before icy fingers crept down my spine. I heard a raven’s call then my world moved again.
Brad was tall and slender with an athletic build. His skin was tan and his hair dark. When Brad glanced over at one of his friends I saw his face once more. His high cheekbones and dimples made his clear chocolate eyes sparkle. I felt his magnetic pull from across the room.
Lisa, are you ok?
Ashley was white as she stared at me.
I lied, I’m fine,
I took a bite of my burger to give me a moment to think. What the hell was that? I glanced at Brad again, and all I felt were little butterflies in my stomach. I wanted to talk to him. I wanted to so badly. So, that’s Brad Ford?
I chickened out.
It took forever to fall asleep that night. I had a horrible sense of foreboding. Whatever happened in the bar spooked me. Finally, exhaustion won out. I fell asleep. Dreams overtook my sleeping mind. I was in a graveyard. A raven sat on a headstone. The bird called to me and I moved forward. I stooped to read the inscription when the raven swooped down trying to dig a claw into my head.
Screaming, I opened my eyes in the woods. The trees were so thick they blocked the sun. I heard horses though. They were coming towards me from three different directions. The only way out was forward, towards a log cabin with a picket fence around it; no, not pickets,
