Marians mother, Henny Jantzen Inscoe, came to America from Germany in 1894 at age thirteen. She immediately started studying and writing poetry. It was Henny who introduced Marian to rhyme. Marian loved the melody of her mothers rhymes.

As years passed, Marian would find a quiet moment to jot down her feelings, oftentimes expressing her emotions of the moment in rhyme. These poems are coming to light now as a tribute to her talentand as a legacy to her family. Hopefully her light will shine on all romantic readers.

Marian Inscoe Hahn

Marian Inscoe Hahn, daughter of Walter Henry Inscoe and Henny Mary Jantzen, loved nature and interesting people. She was born on March 15, 1913, in Orinda, Contra Costa County, California. On February 28, 1985, she passed away in Escondido, San Diego County, California. On May 12, 1934, Marian married the love of her life, Walter Henry Hahn Jr. The two eloped with their mothers in tow and married in Carson City, Nevada. Walter was attending the University of California at Berkeley at the time—studies took precedence—but they were in love. Walter was born on April 11, 1913, one month younger than Marian! He was born in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He passed away on November 29, 1995, in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California. This loving couple celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in 1984. Marian wrote poetry throughout most of her adult life. Many of her poems were inspired by people and events in Monterey and San Diego, California, where her husband served both cities as city manager. —Kurt I. Hahn, Son

As a little girl in the country

I knew every flower and tree,

My whole life was just complete freedom

As a child just wild and free.

As I roamed the lovely canyons and dales

My horse knew most every trail,

In those days before fright and worries

A child’s life was joy without fail.

And now times are just not the same

I long that my children could know,

When no dangers await each corner

Making it unsafe for children to go.

I rode canyons amassed with Lions

And was alone for hours on end,

Just enjoying God’s lovely nature

Times have changed - now warnings I send.

My two children can’t even visualize

That beauty and nature so pure,
