Chapter 1: Brief Introduction to Dark Psychology and Why People Lie

    Introduction

Psychology is broadly defined as a study of the behavior of humans ranging from thoughts to actions. Dark psychology is a subset of psychology that deals with the tendency of humans to prey on others. People that operate under dark psychology often manifest thoughts and actions that purposefully manipulate and exploit others in a predatory way. There are different levels of dark psychology manifestations in people depending on their ability to control or suppress their predatory thoughts and behaviors. Some people know how to use dark psychology tactics intentionally to get what they want. They include salespersons, politicians, and many leaders who can subtly manipulate people so that they can close a deal, get votes, or become more popular. To the extreme end of dark psychology, others have limited control over their dark psychology tendencies and end up drowning in both deviant and unethical thoughts or actions. Often, they turn out to be narcissists and sociopaths among other things. Common to all levels of dark psychology tactics is an age-old trick: deception.

    Lying

Lying is a common but still complex phenomenon. Dishonesty pervades many aspects of human life ranging from small harmless lies like saying you were stuck in traffic when late for a meeting to big lies such as cheating in romantic relationships. Therefore, dishonesty is common but has a wide range of implications.

There are four types of liars: occasional liars, frequent liars, smooth liars, and compulsive liars.

Occasional liars seldomly lie, though they can lie but will feel guilty for this. Frequent liars often tell small and sloppy lies daily and do not go to the extent of covering their lies. Many people will either be occasional or frequent liars. On the more extreme side of lying, smooth liars tell more serious lies and are very good with their words and cover stories. Many salespersons and politicians will fall into this category. The last type of liars are compulsive liars. This is the problematic group that often lies under the influence of dark psychology. They can lie even when they don't have to and can spend significant amounts of time and effort coming up with more lies.

    Dark Psychology and Lying

Dark psychology can be used to understand better the motivation for lying and separate casual lies from the rather intense and problematic lying.  According to Dr. Michael Nuccitelli, a psychologist, all humans are capable of manipulating each other, though, most can restrain this tendency. Lying is one of the more commonly exhibited dark psychology tactics. Noteworthy, casual liars are able to restrain themselves from using deception to exploit others. However, people operating under dark psychology will usually have lost the ability to control themselves and will actively use lies as tools to exploit or manipulate others.

Casual lies are common and almost ingrained in modern social behavior. For instance, causal lies are used to avoid hurting other’s feelings or increasing chances of success. This type of lying can be explained as a typical tendency using many psychological principles such as the psychoanalytic theory and behavior theory.

Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory regarding the id, ego, and super-ego can be used to explain why humans casually lie, even to themselves. The id is the aggressively instinctual part of the brain operating under the pleasure principle while the super-ego is the moral conscience that's driven towards perfectionism. The ego is the mediator between the two parts of the mind and it is responsible for compromises that ultimately shape up one’s behavior. The id uses primitive and powerful urges that push one to seek pleasure while the ego keeps devising realistic strategies to help the ego attain pleasure within the confines of the super-ego.

When the ego is unable to control the headstrong id, the mind experiences anxieties, and defense mechanisms are employed to relieve the anxiousness. Thus, whenever our id leads us into predicaments, part of our defense mechanism might include lying to ourselves (our superego) or others in order to ward off the anxiety.

As for the behavioral theory, human behavior is built based on lessons from a mix of experiences and potential consequences in one's environment. It, therefore, follows that lying is a learned tendency acquired from society. When we repeatedly see that lies result in favorable consequences for others, our behavior patterns become more inclined to lying. These psychological theories, among others, can explain baseline human behavior and casual lying.

However, predatory deception falls outside these explanations, rather it falls under the realms of dark psychology. While exploring a research gap linking dark psychology to deception, Baughman, Jonason, Lyons, and Vernon carried a study that proved that the dark triad personality traits are pre-disposed to dishonesty.

By evaluating psychopaths, Machiavellians, and narcissists, the researchers were able to find causative forces pushing such
