Do you ever feel like you are being manipulated? Like you are a pawn in someone’s chess game? Do you feel like you are being tied down and need to break free? These feelings can be exhausting. Why I Wrote This Book?

Growing up with my grandparents in a small village in West Africa, we lived next door to another family of seven, made up of parents, four adolescent boys, and a girl. We described the mother of this family as a ‘sweet mother of the neighborhood’. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. She was equally hard-working until the day she died.  Her passing brought sadness to the entire community.

Their mother lived a good life and built a good reputation for their family, and the community held the children in high regard. However, the sons had very little education and decided not to work after her passing. With this idleness, they started engaging in manipulative activities. As a six-year-old boy in the 80’s to ’90s in Africa, I would stay home while my parents go to the farm during planting and harvesting seasons. Every afternoon, the youngest son would come around to hang out with me. Eventually, he started taking me out of my parent's house every other day to the soccer field to watch games. While there, he’d find a target and direct me to steal purses and wallets while he watched from a distance, thereby protecting himself from being caught. I would bring the item to him, and he would congratulate and reward me for a job well done.

As we grew older, this behavior gradually became a habit, and I began to see people as targets. My parents decided to send me to school in another town. Things got better for me as I started learning that my behavior was not appropriate. My manipulator maintained his family’s reputation for a while, but things changed when he began engaging in significant activities, including manipulating older folks in the community and extorting money. Long story short, he was eventually caught in an armed robbery and killed.

With increased knowledge and social interaction, I realized how much damage this had on my life as a young adult. I could not engage or create friendships due to the fear of the outcome from my experience as a six-year-old boy. We also see this in our everyday lives. We see kids make friends with people who influence them in terrible ways, and despite the solid home influences they have, they make the wrong choices repeatedly. Their parents feel helpless, baffled by the nature of the so-called friends' impact on their kids. We tend to focus our energy more on the terrible outcomes than the patterns that occur before the illicit activity happens. We ignore the small, repeated actions which turn into habits. This explains the increase in victim rates, despite widespread awareness campaigns in our communities.

Over the years, I have developed an interest in psychology. I’ve taken several psychology courses in abnormal and personal psychology. I have also read multiple psychology books, including but not limited to The 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson and others. I’ve conducted a lot of research and looked over the reports of profilers on notorious perpetrators of these behaviors, which has led to me making a remarkable observation.

There was one consistent factor in everything: the perpetrators changed, the technology and the times changed, but the game patterns are always the same. All these patterns are attributed to dark psychology. So, to help you protect yourselves or loved ones and consequently build a solid mental and emotional defense against such influences, this book was born.

So, if you’re ready to get started, flip over to the next page, and let’s dive into it.

    Section 1: Understanding Dark Psychology

Chapter 1: What is Dark Psychology?

Dark psychology is an inherently aggressive style of engaging with the social world. It is an intensely intimate method of control predicated on the subconscious of another person.

Most psychological techniques have a dual purpose – someone can use them for both ‘white psychology’ and ‘dark psychology.’ What differs is the intent of the person employing the techniques. Dark psychology is the act of persuasion, manipulation, and deception. All these tactics can significantly harm people and have long-lasting, damaging effects.

Both manipulation and dark persuasion can be seen as partial umbrella terms for dark psychology. However, manipulation is also a tactic of dark persuasion itself and vice versa. How can manipulation and persuasion both contain each other? The answer, of course, is that categorizations are contingent and incomplete things a lot of the time.

There are shortcuts to accessing the subconscious of another person based on the fundamental nature of the human psyche. Some people can be more susceptible to manipulation methods than others. However, we will likely all experience manipulation in some way or another.
