The trouble is that most psychological studies often steer clear of the subject of manipulation due to the controversy, among other reasons. The subject may touch upon persuasion, coercion, exploitation, slavitude, and mind control, which are all sensitive topics—manipulation is rarely used as a force for good, and it can make for scary reading! But you can’t help being fascinated, can you? I know I can’t. Like you, I refuse to shy away from the unknown. Who we are as a species, what we do, and why, are all subjects that occupy my thoughts.

That’s why I’ve made manipulation the focus of my research, and why I’ve written this book. It is the first part of an in-depth Dark Psychology series, in which I look closely at human nature and pervasive personality traits: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Elsewhere in this series, I will be exploring gaslighting, emotional blackmail, dark persuasion and dark neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) extensively. Here, we will examine manipulation in its many shapes and forms.

Manipulation—getting other people to do things—is as old as the hills, and we’ve been talking and writing about it for just as long. The very first book of the Bible shows us Satan, as the serpent, using temptation for ulterior motives. Within ancient Greek and Sanskrit texts also dramatize explicitly the connection between willingness and those in power. Shakespeare made poetic case studies of manipulators and manipulation, and modern dystopias—Orwellian nightmares—painted a picture of fake news, propaganda, and distortion of information could send chills down our spines.

Manipulation everywhere, and we experience it every day: in the shape of governmental press releases, political campaigns, advertising slogans, and in subtle requests for favors from loved ones, colleagues, and strangers. Often clouded in fiction and masked by intrigue, manipulation is a sneaky customer that works best when we are aware of it the least.

This book will give you all the information you need to see the subject clearly. Knowledge is power, and everything has an explanation! Preparation is key; if you want to stay a step ahead, you need to have a handle on what’s going on in the world and outsmart the rest.
