Introduction

Having influence over the people around you allows you to convince them to follow a path that is beneficial to you. Now, before you get all judgmental and call this process manipulation, do understand that manipulation lies at the heart of everything that happens in the universe.

The very forces of nature interact with each other to create myriad phenomena. The action of a river going down a mountain creates gorges and valleys. The process of mankind planting grain and vegetables to create a regular food supply is also a manipulation of a natural process.

Manipulation is necessary for life and survival. Flowers manipulate bees and other insects to disperse their pollen by enticing them with nectar. You may try to get a member of the opposite sex to like you by showering them with gifts and showing them that you care for them, which is a form of manipulation.

So, manipulation is natural and a part of our lives and nothing to be scoffed at. However, there is still an evil kind of manipulation as well, which exploits the weak and vulnerable to gain an unfair advantage over them.

This is something that is absolutely criminal and people carrying out this kind of manipulation should be prosecuted and punished. At the same time, we have to try and understand that there is all manner of subtle and not so subtle manipulation happening all around us all the time.

It is connected to the dance of survival that everybody is involved in. You should be geared up to ward off any attempts at manipulating you to do things that benefit others, but also cause you infinite harm. On the other hand, you should also hone your ability to get others to appreciate your point of view. Where you are going to be different in your approach from an ill-intentioned manipulator is in your ability to genuinely align the interests of the people you are interacting with to yours.

It is more like you are manipulating them to agree with you, but in a manner which is beneficial to them too. Let us take the analogy of a father trying to make a toddler finish his or her cereal, by telling them that doing so would make God happy.

The child would agree with you and eat his or her cereal, and by doing so would benefit from eating healthy food. And you would also benefit by having carried out your parental duty.

Of course, I am not suggesting that you lie to adults about facts to get them to do the right things, but you can provide them with appropriate examples of how they would benefit by following your advice.

Say you are trying to sell life insurance to the same father and are finding it difficult, as that person feels that he is in good health and doesn’t need to pay a hefty premium for an insurance policy he feels he does not need.

If you told this young father a hypothetical, but entirely probable, story of how somebody like him could be at risk of accidents, freak weather occurrences and a myriad other causes, he might see the logic behind your sale. This kind of manipulation where you connect with somebody at a subliminal level to convey to them why agreeing with you is in their best interest is something that any person who wants success in life should learn to master.
