You will be given suggestions on how to become better at what you do through effective persuasion methods, as well as how human behavior factors into successful persuasion.
Chapter 1: Why Understanding Persuasion Is Important
Let’s start with a definition. Persuasion is the act of moving by argument, entreaty, or expostulation to a belief, position, or course of action. While the definition is fairly straightforward, the art of persuasion is much more complicated. There are various levels of persuasion, from simple suggestions to mind control methods that manipulate emotions and break down the psyche.
Persuasion is both a science with proven theories and an art form. Everyone can persuade, influence, and encourage action. Not everyone takes the time to learn the techniques that have the most impact on the human decision-making process.
It is safe to say that human beings are being persuaded to do something that someone else wants them to do from the moment they are born. Parents, teachers, friends, and others you encounter all have opinions, advice, beliefs, rules to operate by, and other elements which are used to influence understanding, attitude, prejudices, religious or spiritual beliefs, lifestyle choices, what we buy, what we drive, and where we live. Throughout the course of life, we will make up our minds, change our minds, regret some decisions, and relish the good decisions we have made.
Life is all about choice and in a lifetime, we make choices every day. That represents a lot of decision making in the time human beings have on Planet Earth. Some of those decisions will be based on solid reasoning and others based on emotions. Some decisions will move us forward, and some will require a step back, a redo.
A sales associate trying to get you to make a purchase is practicing their persuasive skills. Commercials are attempting to influence your decisions in favor of their products or company, searing the company name, musical jingle, and advertising tagline into your conscience. Your preacher, imam, or rabbi is using persuasion to reinforce spiritual teachings to make sure the choices you make follow a moral code. A candidate is trying to convince you he or she is not like the others and will really work for you in Washington or your state’s capital.
With all this decision-making going on and all these people who help shape what we decide, understanding how persuasion works give you an advantage. It provides a foundation by which to judge the validity of arguments that are presented to you, whether the person who is making their case is credible or trustworthy, and whether the decision you make will be the result of your own decision-making skills. It can help you spot a situation that may be intent on kidnapping your reason and logic. It can help you protect your emotional and mental health and even your bank account.
How do you make a decision? Do you make spontaneous purchases while waiting in line at the checkout in a discount department store? Do you end up with tickets to a charity spaghetti dinner or pancake breakfast that you have no intention of attending? When the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Animals commercial comes on television, do you automatically reach for your checkbook to send a donation to help those sad puppies and kittens? Did your boss convince you that working on Saturday is good for your career?
These types of decisions are not going to cause major chaos in your life. You likely won’t have any emotional repercussions from making a decision in any of these scenarios. You can give the spaghetti dinner tickets to someone else or simply chalk it off to supporting a good cause and being a better human being. And that impulse buy is not going to cost you your dignity, your identity, or your standing in the community.
Do your children negotiate with you for an extension of privileges? Does your significant other sweet talk you into doing something with them instead of going out for a spa day with the girls or fishing with the boys? Did your parents talk you into visiting Aunt Sally and Uncle Jorge for the holidays this year?
Family members and those we love influence us. Most of the time, the choices they want us to make are for their benefit in some way. Our acceptance of the request is an extension of our love and affection for that family member. It is easier to accept pressure to comply with someone you care about than a total stranger. It’s all in the name of family harmony or as the saying goes, Happy wife, happy life.
And a happy home life is not a bad thing.
Psychologists study and analyze how persuasion works and what happens in the mind when a person is asked to process information. Many theories discuss persuasion and even more ways in which a salesperson, fundraiser, campaign worker, or editorial writer seeks to ply their craft. The root of it all is the basic understanding of human nature.
People are creatures of habit as well as their evolution. Humans have basic needs that must be met, i.e., food, water, and shelter to survive. Then there are the needs that make life better and further ensure survival. Decisions revolving around these types of needs are less problematic than others that deal more with emotional wellbeing or psychological deficits.
It doesn’t take a degree in psychology to be effective at persuasion. A basic understanding of human nature is all it takes for someone to be a top-notch salesperson, a successful fundraiser, or an in-demand recruiter. These successful influencers use their powers of observation to learn how to work for the crowd. They have learned to recognize the signals someone may unconsciously give off that identifies them as a potential target for a sales pitch or donation request. They have learned techniques in how to pitch their product, how to create rapport with a potential customer or client, and how to convince their customer that going ahead with the deal is the exact thing the customer needs to do to make their life better.
Persuasion is also reliant on communication. The way a message is structured, the phrasing and choice of words, are important in how the message will be received. Understanding who the message is targeted for and the audience dynamics of that group can affect the success of a persuasion campaign. Knowing this, sales departments usually have a variety of tools to use to make sure that their pitches get heard, understood, and that action is taken. These tools can include using pre-determined sales scripts, role-playing scenarios during training meetings, and simply learning by doing.
Persuasion also involves the ability to manipulate emotions to achieve the decision the influencer wants the person to make. Emotions are the wild card in human behavior. While we can try to control how emotions manifest, much of how we feel happens under the surface. Reacting with emotion is directly opposite from reacting by reason. The decisions we make when we are happy are likely different than those we make when we are sad. People cannot will themselves to be happy or content. Sometimes, there is no explanation for the way we feel or what triggers us
