    Introduction

    The fact that you are reading this book means that you realize the importance of being able to bear influence upon other people in your life. Being able to persuade others to see things your way is critical in helping you achieve the goals of your life.

    This is because you need to collaborate with other people to get ahead in life. You cannot be an island unto yourself and imagine that you can achieve everything you ever desire all on your own. You need other people’s skills and expertise in addition to your own to help you progress in life.

    The problem with this is that other people have no incentive in coming to your rescue, for they would instead secure their own interest. So how do you solve this problem? By somehow making them believe that seeing things your way is in their own best self-interest, in other words, manipulating them to do things your way.

    The question is, how do we become good at this sort of persuasion? Quite obviously, we cannot use force or coercion to make people willingly do our bidding. We have to use subtler techniques.

    Say you want your boss to give you a promotion rather than a colleague of yours. You can’t angrily demand that your boss promote you and not your competitor. You would much rather prove to your boss that you a far more efficient employee than your rival and that promoting you would be of immense benefit to the company and the boss.

    If you are a suitor trying to win the affections of someone, you have to be able to convey that choosing you as a life partner is in the best interest of that person. You probably cannot express that in a brash and over the top manner but would use a more dignified and calibrated approach to make your case very attractive.

    The thing about manipulating someone in a manner that they defer to your sense of judgment rather than your own is the fact that this is not something that everyone is equally good at. Some people seem to be able to influence others quite easily, while others struggle with doing so.

    However, anyone can improve their ability to bear influence upon others if they put in the required effort to learn the subtle art of manipulation of people. Of course, they will not acquire these skills overnight and will have to practice them over and over again and hone them to the required level.

    The reason it is so difficult to influence people is the fact that the human mind is exceptionally complicated. There is no way of knowing what goes on in people’s minds and what makes them behave the way that they do. That being stated, with enough practice, one can begin to understand the psychology behind the way people behave. This knowledge helps us temper our approach accordingly.

    This is an important skill to acquire because regardless of the profession we are in or what our social and economic backgrounds are; we need to learn to be able to get along and work together with other people.

    This is true in the case of our colleagues, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, and even our families. We need to possess the capability to approach whoever we think could help us achieve a certain goal and be able to bear influence upon them actually to do our bidding.

    If you are thinking of enrolling in an expensive university and need your father to agree to pay the fee, you have got to be able to convince him of the benefits of doing so. There is no right or wrong way of doing that. You must know what approach to take.

    You could try an emotional approach, telling your father that all your classmates in school had enrolled in that university. You could explain that their parents had no qualms in paying the large fee required, so there is no reason for him to do otherwise.

    If, on the other hand, your father is the kind who does not get swayed emotionally, but responds to logic, you could share with him the excellent job placement record of the university in question.

    Reading this book will let you understand how you can learn to be the extremely persuasive person that you had always wanted to be. The book is written in an easy to read and direct manner to help you realize what it takes to understand where other people are coming from.
