    Introduction

We all follow subconscious mental models of thinking that are an outcome of our assumptions derived from our belief systems, education and societal values. Since our interpretation of the world is greatly impacted by our mental model of thinking, it makes a lot of sense to understand what constitutes and influences our mental model of thinking.

It is our mental model of thinking that has a bearing on how we process the information received by us and act upon it. Any individual or an organized group of people would do well to understand mental models of thinking for that will give them a handle about the way people think and act in the way that they do.

You can imagine that people’s mental models of thinking deeply impact the way leaders and indeed organizations behave and act. This is important because not all mental models are the right ones for people or organizations to follow, in that they act as an impediment to progress rather than a catalyst.

Our decision making, as processed through our mental models of thinking, usually goes through several stages.  The first thing one does is to base our course of action upon our personally held beliefs. The next thing one has to deal with is the outside world and make sense of it by developing our own beliefs about it. This allows one to arrive at an understanding of the situation one is facing and take what we deem to be the appropriate action.

Mental models essentially is our way of making sense of the world that we inhabit. These are extremely important for they don’t just influence our thinking, but also how we interact with others and capitalize on opportunities that come our way.

Mental models help us simplify complex situations by prioritizing information, as per our need for it. A mental model is a blue print for action to make something work. Nobody can retain all the information one is exposed to. A mental model of thinking helps one organize complex inputs into smaller parts that can be better organized.

Like I mentioned a little earlier the quality of a mental model of thinking determines how useful it is. It cannot be that you have one standard mental model template for all the complex situations you are likely to encounter in life.

Therefore, the more mental models of thinking you possess the better equipped you are to achieve optimal outcomes in life.  When creating mental models of thinking one cannot overlook the fact that human beings are specialists and do not as a rule have very many mental models of thinking

A person with a technical background, for example, will base his or her mental model on very precise and practical ways of approaching things. A painter, on the other hand, will have a more abstract and imaginative way of looking at things. A marketing person would be very focused on timely achievement of targets.

If we are able to combine all of the above and other perspectives in our minds, our decision making ability would be that much more perceptive and impactful. Looking at things unidimensionally can never work very well for us, as it will typically lead to subpar decision making.

Having access to diverse and myriad sources of knowledge leads to a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of situations leading to better decision making. One should, however, never ever imagine that just because you use a mental model of thinking that has proved to be effective in the past that you possess the magical ability to understand the reality of your situation exactly the way it is.

That is simply not possible, as mental model is just that, a model. It does not or cannot represent reality. The reality is out there. Your mental map of thinking can suggest possible ways of dealing with it, but not provide you a fool proof way of getting exactly the result you hope to achieve.

One has to also remember that a mental model is useful, only if it is based on ability and competence and not ego. If a general bases his mental map of thinking on the mythical military prowess of his troops and leads them to war with an obviously superior enemy, he is not really using the right mental model of thinking!

If you know exactly what your levels of competence can help you achieve, it will be possible for you to create a fine mental model of thinking. If not, it might get you into serious trouble.

Your mental model of thinking has to be premised on an understanding of the principal facts of a situation as differentiated from any assumptions that you
