Introduction

The term ‘dark psychology’ may seem intimidating, but it describes nothing more than the seemingly uncanny ability that some people have of being able to influence others. Whether you like it or not, these people will always be able to get ahead of you in every aspect of life, because they can enlist the support of numerous other people who will support their cause.

Everybody everywhere is busy furthering their cause. Our primeval survival instinct makes it imperative for us to do so. And you can’t be a mere spectator to someone else’s actions aimed at cornering your share of success or happiness.

However, nor can you be all-forgiving and always ready to turn the other cheek. I mean, you have to watch over your own interests. No one else is going to do that for you.

If you need to resort to psychological techniques that allow you to exert influence over others to do their bidding, then you should go right ahead and do that.

You can be absolutely certain that other people do the same all the time. While some of them may be naturally adept at deploying all manner of Machiavellian tactics to further their own interests, others may have tried formally to learn ways and means to hold others under their sway.

Take the case of an MBA degree. Does it not teach you how to understand and influence the mind of the potential customer in a manner that they have no choice but to use the products or services of your company?

Don’t the largest corporations in the world, the major political parties, and even religious organizations use psychological means to manipulate people into believing their agenda? In fact, even members of the same family manipulate each other emotionally for their own needs.

The concept of manipulation may have negative connotations, but is essentially a practical tool used by people to make life easier for themselves and those around them. When little children are sold the fairy tale of Santa Clause as a genuine story, they believe in it and it gives them comfort.

Their parents have manipulated them not for malicious reasons, but to provide the children with a sense of joy and security - something that they need at such an innocent age. Whenever you watch a television commercial that has an emotional undercurrent, you instinctively respond in a certain way, because your brain is wired to respond in a certain manner.

Advertisers know that and so take advantage to leverage raw human emotions to sell their products and services to you. Politicians will often play to the crowd and make dramatic and provocative speeches to evoke people’s primitive instincts with the hope of reaping the benefits on election day.

Manipulation is knowing for a fact that this is happening all around you and having the power to deal with it. Manipulation of another person’s mind can be achieved with the help of techniques like Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which will be dealt with at length in this book.

NLP empowers an individual to seed thoughts into the unconscious mind of another person, encouraging that person to accept them seamlessly and without resistance. You can thus, over time, get them to follow your agenda.

Isn’t that fascinating? You see, NLP by itself is not intrinsically bad. What it seeks to do is transform the way that a person looks at the world. If a politician or an advertiser leverages the power of NLP to see and understand new possibilities, then you are not necessarily being manipulated in a manner that harms you.

For example, a politician who wants to legitimize the use of cryptocurrency may do so with a subtle advocacy campaign. Now cryptocurrency, despite all the negative press that it receives from time to time, is clearly an alternative way of conducting one’s financial affairs in a manner that offers major advantages over the existing financial paradigm.

It is likely to be the way that things will happen soon, and if a politician tries to exert influence over his or her target audience, they are actually enlightening them about a potentially better way of life.

So, now that we are agreed that manipulation is not necessarily all bad, it makes sense for us to leverage it to our best advantage.

That being stated, we really need to understand how it is that one can manipulate someone. One thing that is for sure is the fact that manipulation can’t be an overt act. If it is, it will be seen transparently.

Manipulation has to be subtle. It
