And persuasion can work in all areas of life, including work, friends and family, and even your love life.
How does this work, you wonder?
Humans make decisions based on emotions, whether it's guilt, desire, or even anger.
Damasio, Damasio, and Bechara studied this significant human tendency and published their study Role of the Amygdala in Decision-Making in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences in 2006.
The skill of persuasion is realizing how these emotions are working and using them to change a situation. Their study results are foundational to the teachings in this guide since emotions are so powerful in our successes and failures.

Chapter 1: Characteristics Of Manipulation
The word manipulation carries really negative connotations. You may think only bad people are manipulators. But the truth of the matter is, everyone engages in manipulation at some level. Manipulation is simply the means by which you get relationships or situations to work out in your favor. Using it to hurt people is what makes manipulation bad. It can have lots of fantastic, helpful applications in real life.
Take this example: Your boss is about to make a terrible decision that you know will cut your revenue by half at least. You have tried to warn him, but he is deadset on having his way. Using manipulation, or in other words persuasion, you can make him come around to your way of thinking. Then you just saved the company and your job, and his too. Is this really bad? No, not at all. Your motivations and intentions drive the purity of manipulation.
Learning how to manipulate people is the cornerstone of persuasion. You must know how to manipulate if you wish to actually get your way in life. Getting your way and making people do what you want will improve your life in countless areas, from romantic relationships to family relationships to work. The most successful people in the world are highly skilled manipulators who play situations till things work out in their favor.
Read on to find out the characteristics of manipulation that you must know to become proficient at it. Manipulation is a fine art that anyone can learn. The basics presented here will help you understand what people skills you must develop to become a good manipulator.
What Manipulation Actually Is
Manipulation is commonly thought to be a dirty, underhanded way of getting your way while hurting others. Emotional manipulation is even a type of abuse. But in reality, manipulation is simply the use of different tactics to make a situation turn out in your favor, without others necessarily knowing what you are doing.
Manipulation comes in handy in situations where you can’t just ask upfront for what you want. Maybe you have asked and you heard no, or maybe you tried your best to get someone to see the logic and they are being hardheaded. Bosses and parents are good examples of people who may block your ideas and thus impede your road to success. Using manipulation, you can get these people to come around to your way of thinking.
Manipulation creates an imbalance of power. You are basically taking the power for yourself, without the other person knowing. Then you exploit that situation until you get what you want. You drive everything from behind the scenes, achieving the results you want with minimal participation from others.
Anyone in a position of power has the art of manipulation mastered. These people get their way, sometimes without even asking. They don’t tell you what they are planning – they just manipulate the situation until they get their desired results. You may not even realize you have been manipulated because you don’t know what the manipulator was doing, or if the end result was what he or she wanted. It hardly interrupts your day-to-day life because you were just a pawn.
Obviously, this is not a good feeling. No one likes being manipulated because they have no power in such a situation. However, if the ends justify the means and no one is hurt, there is nothing wrong with manipulating a situation to get your way. It is simply a power play that many people use to get ahead in life. And it works with stellar results every time.
Discreet Motives
The first key to manipulation is always hiding your hand of cards. You do not want other people to know your motives, or then you are giving them power. Using discretion is what tilts the power balance in your direction.
When you keep others guessing, they cannot preempt and intercept any of your actions. This takes away a lot of their power. They also can’t argue with you or try to get their own way. This makes it impossible for you to lose.
Being discreet also keeps your target from knowing what is happening. Since people hate being manipulated, it is a bad idea to let someone know what you are really doing. Keeping people in your favor involves hiding your true motives. You want people to feel that you are a likable person so that they do things for you.
Knowing Your Target Well
To successfully manipulate someone, you must read him or her and gain a strong sense of what drives that person. How that person reacts to certain things, what bothers the person, what makes the person happy, and what secrets the person keeps are all important bits of information.
For example, if your boss loves to play golf on the weekends and values his quality time away from work, then you already have a crucial piece of information. You can use that to your advantage. Imagine that your boss becomes interested in taking on a project that means a lot more work for you. Let him know that you are not skilled enough to do the project without supervision
