Joan didn't think she'd ever made such a difficult decision in her life when she hopped off that bus. She'd thought of it for a while but now as she stood in the town where she'd lived out her childhood, she just wasn't sure anymore. As she watched the bus disappear, she wondered if she should run after it get on and leave before what she was about to do came back to bite her. She wondered whether if it would really stop for a girl like her. The look the driver had given her suggested that he didn’t like the looks of the tall girl with tangled brown hair and faded clothes. Even Joan couldn't believe it was her when she'd looked in the mirror to see herself disheveled and tired a few days back. It was a far cry from the fresh-faced girl she'd once been. It was the main reason why she'd decided that it would have been better to get on the bus in the first place. She needed to get herself together before it was too late. However, now that she was here, she wished she could get back on that bus and let it carry her wherever it would, but Joan had been in a lot of places already in the past five years. What she needed now was not another place to escape to. She needed a new place to start anew liked she'd always assumed all those times she'd gotten on a bus yet had ended up living a life far worse than the last. Maybe this was the first time she was going to be lucky. What she needed was to pick her life where she'd left it and move on. It was about time she forgave herself for all those mistakes she had made and gave herself a chance at a decent future. Besides, the bus was already gone and with it the chance to change her mind. She was going to have to go through with this whether she wanted to or not.

The town hadn't changed much from when she was last here. In five minutes, she could find her way back home and run into the arms of the parents she had let down without a second thought. She wondered what her parents would do on seeing her at their door when they hadn't talked in years. Would they embrace her and welcome her into their home glad to see their estranged daughter after all those years despite the bitterness in their relationship? There was no doubt that they wouldn't completely forgive her for what she had done to the once prestigious family. That was something she would have to live with. But that would be okay as long as they still wanted her in their lives. Some part of her, the part that hadn't quite forgiven them for their part in what had happened made her think otherwise.
