Business Trip with Best Friend’s Daddy

Alexis was devastated. It had been three whole days and Jeremy still hadn't talked to her. This was not how she'd imagined this trip would be. She'd been curled up in bed crying ever since. How on Earth did she always manage to ruin every good thing that happened to her? She knew it was wrong to withhold such sensitive information from him even as she did it. Yet she had gone on with brave face acting like nothing had happened for ten whole years. She would have hidden it longer if she hadn't gotten drunk and accidentally spilled the beans.

Alexis could still remember the look on his face when he'd found out. She'd been drunk but even the alcohol couldn't keep her from remembering exactly ever line of his face as he'd looked at her. She'd known from that one look that she'd probably lose him forever. She wished she could take back her words and make him forgive her, but nothing ever came that simply. At least not for Alexis. She had made a terrible mistake and she now had to live with it. She didn't want to and couldn’t imagine her life wihtout him but if that was the punishment that she face for lying, then she wouldn't bother to fight him on that.

She couldn't blame him if he hated her. It was not everyday a man discovered that he'd had a child with the woman he loved and never knew about it. It was cruel in her opinion and she felt terrible for it but what else could she have done then. He was her best friend's father and to top it all off, she had a very serious boyfriend. Both Sarah and James would have been hurt by what she had been doing behind her back.  Alexis was afraid that she'd end up all alone again just like she had been as a young girl whose parents hadn't wanted her. A girl who had no one to turn to when things got too hard to bear. These people had saved her. This would definitely be a betrayal of their trust. They'd leave her as soon as they knew the truth. Besides, there was no way she could have been assured of Jeremy's support for her. He was a married man who was having an affair with his daughter's best friend and she was only a college girl who was so insecure she'd fallen for him.

Alexis had done the only thing she could think of. She stopped sleeping with Jeremy as soon as she found out she was pregnant and told Jeremy that the child was his. At least that way, her child would be assured of a father and she could keep the people she loved. At the time it had seemed like a win-win situation, but thinking back on it, Alexis realized that it was the most selfish thing she had ever done. She hadn't done it for anyone's sake. Not even for her son's. It had only been so she wouldn't have to go through life alone like she was used to doing.

James, being the honorable man that he was, grew excited with the idea of a part of him growing inside her and asked her to marry him. Alexis had never wanted to get married to anyone let alone James. Still she would have done anything to keep him close to her. Including marrying a man she wasn't sure she loved. Jeremy on the other hand was upset at having been dumped. Nevertheless, he respected her decision and backed off. That was until a few years later when he couldn’t keep her hands off her.

Marrying James must have been her worst decision yet. She didn't know why, but she could never bring herself to love him. The only man that was ever on her mind was Jeremy. It was ridiculous when James was clearly the better man. He was kind, faithful, thoughtful and took care on her. Jeremy on the other hand was a man cheating on his wife. Who knew he wouldn't do the same to her if they ever got married. Not that that would have ever happened. Jeremy was too concerned with his reputation and money to let some naïve college girl get in the way. Alexis was naïve but she had been smart enough to know that.

Over the years, she got used to the idea of being with James though never actually reciprocating what he felt for her. She couldn’t help but think how unfair she was being to him. He was the one raising their son. Not Jeremy who Alexis knew would have never taken on that responsibility. He would have probably shoved her away like she was nothing as soon as he found out that she was pregnant. The good thing was that she always had Sarah's support through it all. Sarah never knew what she was going through but it still helped to have her best friend next to her whenever she needed it.

Alexis wasn't happy, but she was content with what she had. That was until Jeremy came back into her life. It was strange how the two of them had never crossed paths after she had her son even though he was Sarah's father. Jeremy had changed a lot ever since they had last talked. He seemed to have grown much wiser and his thirst for money greatly reduced. At the time, Alexis had just quit her old job. Jeremy didn't hesitate to offer her another one at his own firms. It would have been a dream come true for anyone else. Jeremy's company was well known. However, Alexis hadn't been very happy about the offer. How could she ever hope to lie to him when they worked together? It was different with James because she had never loved him.

It would have been suspicious to turn down such a job offer so Alexis had to take it. The last thing she wanted was James realizing that she had been hiding something so big for all those years. Working for Jeremy proved to be much harder than she thought.  Her feelings for him seemed to never have died. It was the same with Jeremy. Only he wasn't the type to hold back. He was insistent and she was weak. Pretty soon she found herself right back where she had been when she was in college.

It started out harmlessly. She'd stay late at work trying to help him finish up his work. That must have been her first mistake because it gave them the chance to be alone. During that time, they would talk about how life had been since they stopped seeing each other. It didn't take a blind man to notice that the two of them were still in love but as usual, Alexis had more to lose. She had a son to take care of, a husband she was trying so desperately to love and a best friend she couldn't afford to lose if she found out she was sleeping with her father. Jeremy, on the other hand, would always have his money to protect him and no matter how much he claimed to love her that little detail would never change.

They tried to make their affair as discrete as they could. No one could know about what was happening between them. As far as they were concerned, Jeremy was the man who'd decided to take Alexis under his wing and mentor her. He did that with a lot of his employees and while he did actually mentor Alexis, a lot of time was spent making love. Alexis appreciated the fact that Jeremy chose not to lie to her this time. He didn't make any promises to leave his wife for her or marry her. It was hard enough having to keep his son from him without Jeremy getting her to fall head over heels in love with him again.

This business trip had been an attempt to spend more time together. Alexis had thought that it was a very suspicious move and had said as much. Jeremy never went for any of these trips no matter how important they were. He would send his best team instead to take care of things. That he would choose to go to this particular one which was of little importance was strange to those who knew him. Taking Alexis with him was an even bolder move. She could only imagine what people were saying behind their backs. Nevertheless, Alexis being so excited about spending time with him agreed without a second thought.

They had a great time during their trip and would have continued to do so if Alexis hadn't shared the unfortunate news. She had never seen him react like that and for a moment had thought him capable of anything. He'd walked out of their shared room and booked his own eager to keep some distance between them. Ever since, Alexis had been curled up in bed completely unaware of what to do. They missed nearly all their meetings despite having come here for that purpose. The good thing was that it wasn't a very important meeting.

Alexis must have cried herself to sleep because she didn't hear the steady knocking at her door nor the sound of footsteps as someone got into her room. Jeremy stood by her head looking down on her. He could see from her features that she was tired. Her eyes were swollen, her hair a tangled mess. He longed to wrap his arms around her and just forgive but things weren't that easy. She'd betrayed him and as soon as he remembered that he felt his heart harden just a little bit.

Jeremy had a feeling he knew what she must have gone through. He had been a different man then. It was only normal for Alexis to panic. Who knew how he would have reacted. Jeremy himself just wasn't sure he would have taken responsibility. He had a wife and daughter who had mattered more to him than anything else in the world and although he had love Alexis, he would have never thought her worth the sacrifice then. If they had somehow gotten wind of what he had been doing with Alexis, it would have broken their hearts. He wouldn't have been able to watch the disappointment etched on their faces. Things were now different though. He was wiser. Life
