    Erotica - Isa Adam

    Girlfriend’s Best Friend

Patrick was already dressed when he heard Brenda singing in the shower. Her voice was as clear as he remembered from her last album and it carried easily to the living room. He'd already made them breakfast and had taken his share. All that was left to do was sit quietly in the kitchen waiting for her to finish up. He knew it would be a long wait. Brenda never managed to be early for anything no matter how much he tried to get involved. It was a wonder she made it to all those concerts and interviews on time. Maybe she took that more seriously than she did their relationship.

Patrick didn't mind the wait. He'd waited two whole months so she could finally have some time for him. A few more hours wouldn't make much of a difference as far as he was concerned. He tapped his finger absently on the kitchen counter humming one of her songs as he did. He knew she'd be upset when she heard him. She no longer thought of singing as a hobby. It was work and she tried to avoid any thoughts of work when she was away from it. His voice wasn't anywhere as good as hers and frankly speaking, he didn't wish for it. Not when he saw how hard and stressful her life had become the past two years since she had become famous. There were always events to go to, studios to record in and albums to sell. Although she made much more money than he did as a nurse, he wouldn't have hard it any other way. He was happy with his simple life because he didn't have to worry about crazy stalker fans who would follow you anywhere.

If there was one thing that Patrick could have changed it was the fact that she no longer had time for him. She barely even had enough for herself and as much as she would have never admitted it, he knew it was killing her. But it was the life that she had always wanted and so sacrifices had to be made if she was ever going to stay on top. That didn't mean that it didn't hurt him when she canceled all her plans to go be with fans who couldn't possibly care for her as much as he did. None of them had seen how hard she'd worked to get where she was then. All they saw was a powerful rich singer. What they would have all wanted to be but never would. Patrick saw the real thing behind it all. It hurt him when he lay in bed all night alone because she'd gone to some other country for a concert and it hurt him that he could go weeks without seeing her. Not even hearing her voice over the phone because she was too busy to call him.

I'm done babe, Brenda announced walking into the kitchen. She startled him and he almost fell out of his chair. He looked at his watch. Thirty whole minutes had passed with him deep in his thoughts. He'd been like that for a while now and would completely zone out of conversations just to think about their past and where they were headed.

You look lovely, he complemented genuinely. He doubted that she even cared what he thought. She'd heard the same lines so many times in the last two years that it didn't even matter if he said it. Magazines had probably said things much more interesting about her. Still, Patrick just wanted her to know that he still found her attractive.

Thank you, she said absently as she headed for the coffee pot. Her mind seemed to wander further away from him these days. Patrick had a feeling he knew what was going on but was never going to admit it to himself. There were the late nights, the mysterious call that she never picked up when they were together claiming it was her agent.

Patrick ran her eyes over her body appreciating what she had become. She exercised more now so as a result was in better shape than she had been all her life. The clothes were custom made and so they fit her like a glove. He could tell from their label that they probably cost more than a week's work for him. In comparison to her, Patrick didn't look half as good. Of course he was still the handsome young man that she had met years ago and had fallen in love with. However, the clothes just weren't nearly as nice or expensive. It was one of the things that Brenda was always hassling him about. When she'd given up, she'd buy him new expensive clothes and place them in his closet, but he never put any of them on. It had driven her crazy and was probably why she'd stopped taking him to all those red carpets. Patrick didn't blame her for that but he still wasn't going to give up a part of himself just so she'd be less embarrassed of him. All those clothes and money just weren't him.

Patrick watched her as she quickly had her breakfast. She had no idea that he'd made it for her. There was a time when she had a strong sense of appreciation for the things he did for them. Now it was like he was totally invisible to her. As long as he could be part of her life, Patrick didn't think it mattered at all.

He checked his watch suddenly feeling uncomfortable at having to sit there with her. The silence was awkward and depressing. He would open his mouth as if to say something but then suddenly stop. They had nothing to say to each other anymore. They'd been too apart for so long that they'd lost all they had ever been. This was now like an awkward first date.

This is going to be so much fun, she said excitedly as she finished up her food. He was glad for the broken silence. He nodded lightly agreeing with her. If there was anything he knew about their friend Alex was that he knew how to throw the best parties ever. This would be no different.

I'm just glad we'll get to spend some time together, he said reaching across the table for her hand and squeezing it. He tried not to notice the impassive look on her face.

When they left the house half an hour later, Patrick had a feeling that this was going to be a great night for them and he couldn't wait to share it with her.  They headed toward her new car and without delay, drove off. He took the passenger's seat knowing how much Brenda liked to drive her cars. He himself would have liked to be in his old van but like most things, he'd hard to give that up as soon as she'd gotten rich. Apparently it didn't look good to see famous people and their partners in beaten down cars when they could afford so much better.

The party had already started when they got there. Patrick could already feel himself relax. This was nothing like those parties that Brenda liked to take him to where there were so many celebrities all trying to show off. This was more his style. All his friends were there and the music was great. All of them, apart from Brenda who always had something to prove, were dressed casually. She however didn't seem to care that she looked overdressed in the crowd. Being famous, she'd gotten used to catching
