    Best Friend’s Mother’s Birthday

What do you think? Pat asked his best friend. He had just changed into another suit and still wasn't sure if he should go for it. He had been doing this for a while and could read the impatience on his friend's face.

You look great man, Logan tried to assure his best friend for the third time that night. He didn't understand why Pat had to make such a big fuss over a suit. The man was in his fifties and still had women half his age fawning over him even when he wore a garbage bag over his head. Logan was the one who should have been worried about his looks.

Are you sure? he asked again still not confident with Logan's answer. Logan simply rolled his eyes and went over to the couch. He needed a break from Pat. The man seemed to be getting more infuriating than ever. Pat not feeling very good about his latest choice went back to his room to change again.

We should get going. My mom will kill me if I'm late, he said checking the time on his watch.

Pat came out five minutes later in a much different suit. This one he liked even more. He saw the appreciative look on Logan's face and knew he didn't even have to ask. If he was like this, he could only imagine Ashley's reaction. He had never seen her in a suit so he had decided to change his look if he was ever going to get close to her. He was going for a cool and sophisticated look.

Well we can't afford to upset her. Can we go now? he replied the smile on his face growing wider.

Logan rolled his eyes at Pat. The older man seemed to say the most ridiculous thing at times. Sometimes he wondered how they could even be friends. Everyone asked him that since they had a very big age difference. Sometimes they would go out and someone would refer to Pat as his father. It had been strange at first but the two had quickly gotten used to it.

Logan took the car keys from the kitchen counter and left. His best friend Pat followed behind him. They got into his car and drove to his home. Logan was from a very rich family. His parents' house was in a nice neighborhood that Pat had never gotten to visit until he met Pat.

This evening was his mother's birthday. As they usually did, the family was going to meet for dinner to celebrate her birthday. Her parents, cousins and one son would be there. Maybe even her ex-husband would come. For some reason, he had never stopped trying to be part of her life after the divorce. It was going to be a very long and boring dinner if the other years were anything to go by. Pat wasn't invited, but Logan had insisted that they go together. Pat was sure that Ashley, Logan's mother wouldn't appreciate his presence in her house. She had made it clear from the very first time they met that she did not like him, even though he was a close friend of Logan's. Regardless of that, Logan had still decided to drag him to dinner. It wasn't that he didn't know of his mother's strong dislike for Pat. Logan just didn't care. He had made it clear that no amount of talking could ever change the kind of friendship that he had with Pat. Besides, as an only child Logan could get away with anything.

Are you okay? Logan asked. He had just realized how distracted his friend was.

Of course. Why do you ask? Pat asked feigning shock. Logan simply smiled at the effort. However, he could read his best friend like a book. They both knew that Pat was very worried. He had never confided in his friend but Logan knew him well enough to find out the whole truth. It had come to his attention a few months back that Pat had some feelings for his mother. If it were any other friend, they would have been upset by the realization. However, Logan was different. As much as he felt protective of his mother, he still wanted his best friend and mother to be happy. Besides as much as he didn't like to admit it, Pat was old enough to be his father so the march made a lot of sense.

Don't worry about anything, Logan assured him. Pat gave him a confused look. He didn't understand what the younger man was talking about. He shrugged his shoulders and looked back to the road. Logan had been drinking before and he might have been drinking. Hopefully, he wouldn't end up crashing the car.

Logan's car was the fastest that Pat had ever been inside. It was way better than his old rusty truck. He had gotten it from his father who had also gotten it from his father before him. Logan's car, unlike his, was brand new and knowing him, he would probably have another new car in under a week. If he had ever wanted a family, he would have passed on the truck. It came with his best friend having a lot of money. He could afford all the fastest and most beautiful cars. As a result, it didn't take them that long to get to his mother's house. It was a magnificent building that always left Pat in awe every time he laid eyes on it. The house was as glorious as the woman that lived inside it—the woman who he desperately wanted for his own.

As they went closer to his house, he felt his heart beat quicken. It was the nervousness. He knew she wasn't going to react very well to having him inside her house. She didn't like him very much.

Pat didn't blame her for not liking him. Not many people did after all and as a result, he didn't have many friends. Pat could be very strange. Despite him being in his fifties, he didn't have a single friend who was his age. He acted like he was in his twenties preferring to party and drink while other men his age were busy with their families. Pat didn't think there was anything wrong with his lifestyle. However, not many people seemed to agree with him.

We're here, Logan said parking his car. Logan and Pat left the car and walked towards the huge house.

Every step closer to the house felt even heavier than the last for Pat. His heartbeat quickened at the prospect of seeing her again. The last time he'd come here, he'd asked her out and she had turned him down in the worst way possible. Pat wasn't one to give up though. He would keep trying until she finally gave in. Even if it was out of pity. He would show her that he could be the kind of man that she had always wanted despite what she thought of him.

Pat and Logan got inside the house to find everyone already settled at the dinner table. It was just like Logan to come late and attract everyone's attention by being the last to arrive. He should have expected it, but he had been too absorbed in himself and the suits he was wearing. A thing that Pat was not very fond of. He would have preferred to keep a low profile especially with how his family didn't seem to like him. He could already spot a few dirty looks thrown
