Johns Hopkins University, I worked my ass off to get here. All throughout high school this is where I wanted to be. As I stepped off the bus that led to the campus I realized that I had arrived, on a full scholarship too, not many people I knew could say that. I was book smart, a nerd if there ever was one. I took the crisp air into my lungs and exhaled, walking forward with purpose.

Baltimore was cold and I wore a large wool coat to protect my frail, white, California skin. It went from being sun-drenched to sun-starved overnight, my tan vanishing in a week. I wasn’t use to this town and I hadn’t made any friends, but I figured I had to give myself time.

It was the first day of class, but I had been here for a month. I printed out my schedule in my apartment, and like a fool wandered aimlessly around campus, taking in the fruits of my labor. I think subconsciously I wanted to get lost. It was the experience of immersion I so desperately craved.

I enrolled in the Liberal Arts program due its reputation. I had always wanted to be a teacher, and I knew that a degree from Johns Hopkins would help me achieve my goals in life. It would be a long road, but I knew I could do it. I was determined. After a long, cold walk around campus, I finally found the building which contained my first class: African American Studies.
