When I got invited to yet another of Alex's family vacations, I had no idea that I'd find his mother crying her eyes out of the bathroom floor. We were alone in the cabin. Apparently, no one had thought it important to show up for the vacation apart from me and Emilia. I was so used to seeing her present a picture of strength that I had to pause at the door just to be certain that it was her. When she looked up at me, I felt my heart get broken by those sad blue puffy eyes, the streams of mascara down her face and the tangled blonde hair. I couldn't help it. I just had to go to her.

Are you okay, Mrs. Grey? I asked wrapping my hand around the tiny woman's body. 

Well my damned family just decided not to show up, she yelled. I was obviously surprised that a woman I'd always known to be cold and held back could reveal so much feeling. I didn't know what to say to her, so I rubbed her back awkwardly hoping that that would be enough to calm her. I could remember being in her position many times before when I was younger. Emilia had always treated me like a son and never hesitated to comfort me.

My best friend had just invited me on a vacation and hadn't shown up. Now there I was stuck with his mother in a cabin having no idea what to do with myself. 

Alex must have known how angry I was because he wasn't picking up my calls. I left him message after message hoping he would have the grace to defend himself, but it was probably not a very good idea. If there was one thing I knew about Alex was that he was a selfish as they come. Yet for some reason we were friends. I couldn't deny that I felt sorry for Emilia. This woman had dedicated her whole life to her family. She'd left her job to look after them and had never returned even when her husband had gotten rich and now her family couldn't even be bothered to show up to a two-day vacation. They hadn't even had the decency to say it to her face and decided to cancel it at the last minute not putting into consideration the amount of time she had spent planning. Even I could never do that to my own mother although she was an alcoholic who had never paid me any attention.

Emilia was excited by the vacation.
