    Ravaged Hearts - Addison Bleu

    CHAPTER 1

    What the Heart Wants

Heartbreak was a unique experience. I thought I would be hurt over Emily for a short few days before I eventually got over her, but a week later I was still miserable.

Everything reminded me of her. I went out for dinner with my mom and sister, and all I could think about was whether Emily would like the food, what she would think about the place and how she would prefer a ‘less fancy restaurant’. Every moment I spent in my office was heavy with the memories of the first time she had stepped in, the day she had received her publishing deal; the joy on her face, and the way she had given herself so freely to me on my desk. When I closed my eyes, I could still taste her sweet pleasure on my tongue.

The worst part was that Emily kept trying to reach me. When I had received her text, minutes after the conversation I overheard taking place between her and Hunter, it had taken me a while to pull myself together enough to respond. When I finally did, I sent a simple, ‘Don’t bother.’ I didn’t need her to break my heart face-to-face. Since then, she had tried to call multiple times, and she sent more texts than I could count. I had to tell Stella not to allow her into my office anymore.

At first, I wanted to take a few days off work and wallow, but then I realized how pathetic that was. Instead, I threw myself into my work harder than I had ever done. I got up early and headed to the office, working relentlessly all day to the extent where I forgot to eat sometimes. Stella had to bring lunches in for me and stand at my desk until I finally ate something.

I stayed in the office all day, getting off hours after everyone else had gone home. Which led to another difficulty of being heartbroken that I had not anticipated.

The moment I decided that I was done throwing my pity party, my first thought was to find someone new to take my mind off Emily. I headed to one of the clubs I used to frequent before I met her, determined to pick up someone to take home. To my surprise and dismay, the multitude of women, with various levels of beauty and in different states of undress which I usually found sexy, were suddenly all unappealing.

My eyes roamed the dance floor for strawberry blonde hair in high ponytails
