Double Her Dragons - Dragon Menage Romance - Emma Taylor

    Double Her Dragons

    Chapter 1

Many would say she was crazy. Leaving her job and deciding to leave town because of a promise made to a man probably was crazy. Not knowing where she was going, not having a plan was downright insane, but she was determined to break the chain of her humdrum life. Ava Murphy was finally going to start living her life for her . She was scared as hell. But since spontaneity was the new order of her life, Ava threw her bag over her shoulder and walked toward the door.

Before she walked through it, she took one more look back at the empty house. It was the house she had grown up in. There were good memories and a fair share of bad ones, but she wouldn’t exchange any of them for the world. There was no point in staying there. She was alone now and staying at this point would hurt too much. As Ava closed the door, she allowed a memory to take over.

    Ava, honey.

She turned to her father, surprised. She thought he had been sleeping when she stopped in to check on him. The nurse she hired to care for him when she wasn’t home had left. She was a nurse herself, so when she left the hospital, it was like a second shift started when she got home. Ava took a major hands-on part in caring her father.

Good morning, Daddy. I thought you were asleep.

I didn’t want to sleep until I spoke with you.

His voice was a thready whisper. John Murphy was fading away before her eyes. Swallowing, she walked into the room and perched on the bed, taking his hand in hers. We can talk when you wake up.

    No, right now.

Fear rose up in Ava for a split second. Was her father trying to say goodbye? Could she bear to sit down and listen? O-okay. What’s on your mind?

You’ve sacrificed much for me, baby girl.

Taken aback, she shook her head. No, Daddy, nothing is a sacrifice when it comes to you.

He smiled weakly. My selfless angel. You’re more like your mother than you will ever know.

Ava grinned, happy to be compared to the woman she didn’t get the chance to know very well, the beautiful woman she saw in photos. It had been just her and her father for a while. Her mother died in a car accident when she was seven.

Thanks, Daddy. But like I said, nothing that I’ve done for you is a sacrifice. If I had a chance to live my life on repeat, I wouldn’t do a thing differently.

Ava, you’re twenty-nine years old and you have no social life to speak of.

Of course, I do. I have plenty of friends. I socialize when—

When you go to work and with me when you get home.

Well, I mean...I...I... she shrugged. Her father had a point.

When was the last time you went on a date?

Ava’s cheeks colored. "I’ve...I date. Remember that time when—there was that guy once." Her eyes lowered and she pursued her lips. Okay, she had nothing. The last time she got any action was about two years ago when she hooked up with the nerdy pharmacist from work and the sex wasn’t that remarkable. It was utterly disappointing. She hadn’t had the time to pursue any other romance after that, between her job and taking care of her father.

Her father gave her a knowing look. I feel like you haven’t lived, Ava and I think it has a lot to do with me.

    Daddy—

No, let me finish. You stayed in Kansas for college. You decided to work in the same small town you grew up. You never took that high school trip to Vegas with your graduating class. You never got the real college experience. You know, living on campus, going to parties, having boyfriends, any of that, all because of me. All because you thought your old man needed you. Truth is, I did need you with me, sweetheart and I was selfish not to push you to branch out and experience certain things. After I lost your mother, I was terrified of losing you too. I see now that you missed out on so much because of me. And since I got sick you’ve sacrificed even more of your time, your life, your happiness to take care of me. You should be married with a kid or two by now.

Ava shook her head vehemently. "Don’t talk like that, Daddy. First, you’re the most selfless person I know. What about what you sacrificed for me? You devoted yourself
