Sweet story. A little predictable, but a nice sensory read in the middle of the night. Enjoy.

Chapter One

Lily felt as though she was in one of those dreams where no matter how much you tried, you just couldn’t wake yourself up. Her body felt as if were dead weight and couldn’t move a muscle. In the dream, she and Grayson were in the car having a conversation, only he was doing all the speaking. No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t seem to find her voice.

Grayson, do you hear a word I am saying to you?

He kept an eye on the road, ignoring her question.

And then when she tried to move her hands or any of her other body parts, it was if the seat belt that was over her chest constricted her from moving any of her body. She was completely helpless in her dream. All she wanted to do was wake up. And then when she looked at the road in front of her, she saw a bright light, blinding her until darkness surrounded her completely.

She felt herself being transported into another dream, but she couldn’t see anything. There were only voices coming from all around her. Lily was confused as to why she was there and whom the voices were coming from. They were becoming clearer as she tried hard to hear what they were saying. Her eyes were still closed. She tried prying them open, but the lids were still too heavy to move. She could hear her name being mentioned as she tried to arouse herself from her deep sleep. With all the strength she could muster, she tried to move her arms, but the voices seemed to ignore her attempt at getting their attention.

Why won’t she respond to anything? Is she really okay?

Gavin? Gavin was the voice she heard? But why couldn’t she see him?

I don’t know why she won’t open those big, beautiful blue eyes for us.

The sound of Nathan’s soothing voice in the room brought comfort to her, calming her nerves. Nathan was the friend she could always count on to make her smile when she was having a bad day. He knew just what to say to make her feel good again.

But why couldn’t she see them? And why didn’t she hear Grayson’s voice? Where was her husband? She needed to hear him near her. He was her rock. Grayson was the heart and soul of their relationship. He could handle any situation that needed attention, especially in a crisis. Then it hit her. That’s when she remembered being in the car with Grayson and then everything went black. Oh my God, Grayson.

An unfamiliar male voice spoke beside her. Mrs. Mitchell will recover from this. Her injuries are merely external. She has a few minor scrapes and bruises, and a nice goose egg on her forehead from where she hit her head. There’s going to be bruising across her chest from the seat belt. It appears she was lucky, only sustaining minor injuries and her body will heal in time. The only thing I worry about is that Mrs. Mitchell suffers from blunt head trauma. I predict she’ll come out of this at any time. In the meanwhile, keep talking to her and maybe she’ll recognize your voices and wake up very soon. I will leave you two alone with her while I finish my rounds. Please let my staff know the minute she wakes up.

Thank you, Dr. Alvarez. We won’t leave her side, Gavin said.

Why hadn’t they mentioned anything about Grayson? Oh God, where was her husband? Please tell me I’m dreaming and I’ll wake up from this at any moment.

Gavin, I’m so scared. What if we lose her, too? Nathan said as she felt a hand cover hers. A touch of a warm palm heated her cold, prickly skin. She tried to lift her arm to let them know that she was there, listening to them as they spoke. Her mouth felt like cotton as she tried to find the strength to speak to them.

We’re here for you, sweetheart. Open those pretty little eyes for Nathan and me. Show us that you’re okay. Come on, baby...wake up, please.

Her head pounded like someone had hit her with a sledgehammer. The throbbing pain made it harder for her to want to open her eyes. But she didn’t let the pain stop her. She needed to make some sort of sign that she was alert and heard everything they were saying. She had never been a quitter and never gave up easily on anything in her life. I can do this. Lily fought like hell to get herself through this one way or another. Open your eyes, damn it!

Jesus, will you listen to the monitors, Nate. They are going crazy all of a sudden, beeping louder and louder. Do you think she is coming out of it?

I don’t know. Sweetie, come back to us. Gavin and I are here with you. Don’t be afraid to open your eyes or move your hand. Show us that you are okay and you want to be here with us. Gavin, maybe you should go get the nurse. I can see Lily’s eyelids are fluttering. I think she’s coming back to us.

Lily could see light begin to come into view. It was still fuzzy, but at least now she could open her eyes. She could hear loud footsteps pounding around in the room. Little by little the white walls came into view and the bed she was lying on. Things were a bit blurry still, but now she could see Nathan as he hovered over her from above.

Thank God, he whispered as his lips pressed against the top of her head.

What seems to be the trouble, gentlemen? Is Mrs. Mitchell finally waking up? a woman said next to her. She saw the blurry image of a female’s face in front of hers. Honey, can you hear me?

The room was so bright, Lily had to blink a few times. It took her a few tries before she could get her eyes to finally adjust to her surroundings. Now she could see that Gavin was standing behind Nathan as they waited for the nurse to have a look at her.

She could see the woman’s smile become clearer the more she blinked away the blinding light. Why hello there, Mrs. Mitchell, how are you feeling? the nurse asked her from the side of the bed.

Thirsty. Water, please.

I got it, Lily. Nate poured her a glass of water
