A very steamy story, and well written. Lots of hot scenes. I highly recommend.

Chapter One

"Sweetie, why don’t you just change your phone number? That is the tenth time that I have noticed your phone beep today."

Addison was right. Sage was fed up with her ex-boyfriend, Steve, calling and harassing her as she tried to enjoy her girls’ weekend in Vegas with her best friend, Addison. Sage was trying really hard to relax and have a good time. But somehow Steve had found out she was in Vegas and left numerous texts and nasty voice messages on her cell, claiming he needed money from her right away.

"Honey, you need to change your number again. It shouldn’t have to be like this for you. Why can’t he just accept that you are done and you don’t want anything to do with his sorry ass anymore?" Addison huffed in anger.

Sage wished she had Addison’s courage to tell people off and to stand up for herself. Sage didn’t have the same attitude and strength as her friend appeared to have. She had met Addison when they attended the same junior college and attended a few classes together. Since then, they had become the best of friends.

Sage sighed as she stared at the cool blue pool water that beckoned her to enter as the sun beat down on her. I know, Addison.

"And don’t forget to call your parents this time so they don’t have to send one of your father’s ‘goons’ or right-hand men, as he refers to them, to your apartment to check on you again. I know how much you loved that surprise visit last month," Addison said as she eyed her from beneath her sunglasses.

Sage hated to ruin the fun she was having with Addison by talking about Steve and now her parents. I will, as soon as I get a new cell number. I promise to notify them this time. I don’t particularly enjoy when my father sends someone to check on me either.

Addison’s hand patted hers as it rested on the armrest of the chair. That’s because he worries about you, sweetie. They both do. Even though you may not believe it, they are still concerned parents that deep down really do love you.

Sage snorted. Believe what you may, my dear friend. It just gives my father a reason to keep tabs on me, to make sure that I am not doing anything to embarrass him or my mother, giving a reason for the family name to happen to appear in the newspaper. Trust me, he wasn’t happy when he found out I was dating Steve. After I mentioned in a phone conversation to him once that I was dating Steve, my dad turned around and ran a damn background check on him. He couldn’t wait to call me right away and proceed to inform me of what a mistake it would be for me to continue a relationship with a man that couldn’t hold down a job if his life depended on it and had no financial means to support me with.

Sage couldn’t help that she had always been a loser magnet for men like Steve. He knew how to push her buttons when it came to other people discovering that her father was a retired senator from Utah. Whenever Sage happened to meet someone new, she never spoke of her father’s wealth and very powerful political career. She didn’t want to be labeled Senator Raymond Monroe’s daughter. She just wanted to be known as Sage Monroe, the bar server that worked at the Last Chance Tavern owned by the wonderful and loving Duffey family.

She had fallen in love with her job from day one. The whole family had welcomed her as if she belonged there. Sage had waited almost a year before she had finally told the owner who her parents really were. It wasn’t as though she was embarrassed. She just wanted people to get to know her for who she really was.

From the minute she met the owner, Joe Duffey, he and his family welcomed her with no qualms. She had often thought of Joe as the father she had always wanted when growing up. Sage loved watching the interaction between Joe and his three children. He was always showing affection towards them and just being a part of their lives.

The Last Chance Tavern was a warm and welcoming environment. It wasn’t like any other bar she had ever been to, and Sage enjoyed working and being involved in it. The bar had been started by Joe’s father, Pat Duffey, who had left it to Joe and his wife Macy, who had done the bookwork and most of the cooking until five years ago, when she passed.

Sage had started working there right after they finished remodeling the bar, making it more family friendly. The top of the long L-shaped bar had been sanded down and brought back to a shiny new finish, including the fine-shaped beveled edges. All the chairs and barstools had been replaced throughout the place. The bar was painted a dark mocha with crown molding at the top for elegance. Joe’s daughters, Lana and Madison, had decorated it and chosen modern, contemporary pictures for the room, not the typical beer-themed glass ones that you might see in any bar. Joe’s son Tye insisted that there were flat screen TVs in every corner of the room for people to watch their favorite sports. Last Chance Tavern was a classy family atmosphere that they all prided themselves on portraying. The back room was painted a lighter shade where they had a few pool tables, dart boards, tall barstool tables that were lined up along the wall for customers to sit, and a video music machine that could be heard throughout the tavern. On Friday and Saturday nights they had karaoke from ten to twelve. That way the patrons that wanted to come in for dinner could still enjoy a meal without hearing the loud, obnoxious squeals of people’s voices if they didn’t want to.

There were a few extra tables in the bar area for the customers to eat at instead of having to sit at bar-like tables when they wanted to come in to enjoy a meal along with their drink. Duffey’s Last Chance was kid friendly. Even though it was a bar, Joe always made the place feel as though you could bring your children in and not have the rough, dark bar atmosphere. There was a large window that brought in the sunlight in the afternoon. And by evening, the moon shone in to help light up the cozy tavern. To Sage, working with a hunky guy like Tye was an added bonus.

Addison grabbed her drink from the table next to her as she soaked up the sun. Well, now that you aren’t with him anymore, I’m sure that you are pleased to have your parents off your back.

Sage’s father had spent most of her life in the political spotlight with her mother by his side. Now that his term was over, they spent their retired life in Florida, which was far enough away that Sage didn’t have to worry about spontaneous visits from them since she’d moved to California after graduation.

Raymond and Alexandria Monroe had led active lives from the moment Sage was born. Never staying at home for a long period of time, they often had to run off somewhere important in regards to promoting his candidacy, trying to win votes for his election as senator. Having a child tended to cramp their busy political lives. Sage had always dreamed of having a warm, welcoming family such as the Duffeys. She felt she’d never received the love and attention she needed as a child.

She had moved out right after high school graduation and told her parents that she had no intention of attending the Ivy League college they intended her to go to. After high school she’d announced to her parents that she planned on going to a community college and finding a place on her own. Sage’s parents had enough money to last them for ten lifetimes. But she had always prided herself on being an independent woman and not expecting a dime from her parents as she ventured out on her own. Raymond and Alexandria weren’t too keen on the fact that their daughter chose her own future and not the one that was expected of a political family.

Sage spent minimal time
