About this ebook

Parody Barry lives life on the crazy side. Recently, she has been waiting... and waiting for the call from John's company to start her new job. When the call doesn't come, she finally confronts John who gets the ball rolling.

He doesn't count on that ball rolling right over him and dragging him into another mess (or two), which Pary ALWAYS finds herself in. Unfortunately, for John, the boss wants to keep Pary under surveillance. He's not sure if he can trust her seemingly innocent intrusion into their past business.

So it's up to John to keep an eye on her. Or at least try. Pary has more disappearing acts than a magician, and John has all he can do to keep up.

Pary Barry & John- The New Job - Kamaryn Kelsey

This is a work of fiction. Names, places, and events are products of the author's imagination. Any resemblance to real people, places, or events is purely coincidental.

This is not a standalone book.

    Chapter 1

Parody Barry believed she lived under the shadow of a giant, garbage spewing, life altering chute. The chute firmly kept its victims in place, with one trial after another. Otherwise, why would she be in this position?

Surely that evil source was to blame for her current position of waiting... and waiting for a job call that didn't come. She waited the first week, patiently. She waited a second week, impatiently. Now she was past boiling, and the lid was going to blow if she didn't hear something soon. There was only one thing she could do... ask John.

John Smith lived across the hall from Parody, in the same apartment building. It's how they met and how she ended up with the job interview and the unknown job. In fact, John conducted the agonizing interview.

Parody, or PB, or Pary (they were all equally bad in her mind) decided she needed to change her clothes before bothering John. Since his recent divorce, he was grumpy and prickly. Well, maybe he was always that way, but there was no point in giving him ammunition. Pary's sense of good taste was missing when it came to clothes and decorating... at least at home.

When she worked at her office, she and her Private Investigator's office looked normal. When she clocked out for the day, she indulged in her own unique style of anything she liked. The explosion of colors and patterns, in her apartment and personal wardrobe, made her happy. Most people, including John, didn't understand it. And while she was average looking physically, with light brown hair and dark gray eyes, on the inside she was as unique as her apartment.

Since his divorce, John now lived in Pary's world. At one point, he lived on the other side of the fence where the sun gently smiled on those it favored. The bitter divorce shoved John from the sun to the chute. Pary wondered how long it would take him to adjust. She squinted in concentration. Maybe the sun would snatch him back as suddenly as it turned on him and scorched his world. That would make him happy. But for now, he was stuck with Pary, in her world of garbage and other nasty things.

Today's proof of her cursed existence came in the form of John himself, and the open elevator waiting for her in the lobby of her apartment building. Of course... no chance to change clothes. She gave John a crabby look as she stepped into the elevator.

You just had to hold it for me, didn't you? she snapped, steamed because her plans to change clothes just took a fatal hit.

John's brows went up. You're complaining about it? Usually, it's the other way around. He looked at her clothes, the ones she wore to serve a court summons. Still moonlighting?

I have bills which need to get paid every few months or so, John, she replied sarcastically. Those companies actually prefer a monthly payment. Can you believe their nerve? So, yes, I'm moonlighting! A little food, now and again, keeps me coming back for more. Although, maybe I should just quit eating and end this ugly cycle.

The elevator stopped on their floor, and she held back. Go ahead, shoo! She waved him out of the elevator. There was no need for him to witness her dubious disguise in all its shame. Especially since she'd been forced into it, because no one ever called to give her a start date for the new job!

John shook his head. Ladies, first, he grinned.

You're a jerk, she told him as she left the elevator.

He took it well. Oh, you've been talking to Victoria again?

She gave him a dirty look. Just because she took a job for his ex-wife, Victoria... a job that didn't pan out, thanks to him. She tried to stare him down, but he wasn't budging. Fine! She'd accept that challenge. Pary strutted out of the elevator, dressed as a punk. She walked the walk, turned, and talked the
