Chapter 1
Frank Simon turned to John and asked, What do you think? Who has the best chance of getting past security at the Big Ease Club? We need to get a bug planted in his private room.
Frank had pulled all the team members from their current assignments for this special task. Big Ease was suspected of dealing drugs out of his club, and they needed proof. Getting that proof was not going to be an easy task, so Frank called a meeting with all the field team members of Simon Security Systems.
John Smith looked at each member of the team, considering their skills and assets. When he got to Parody Hope Barry, he gave a mental snort and moved on. Pary's chances of getting into the private room of the notoriously womanizing rapper were about as good as Frank's.
John's eyes moved back to one member, and he pointed her out to Frank. Tall, blonde, leggy, and with enough personal assets to fill out a low cut dress. Taylor sent a snarky look to the other women on the team. John and Frank felt the tension in the room notch up as the other women on the team took offense. Except Pary. She looked perfectly content with John's choice. John narrowed his eyes, looking for a secret sign that she was about to sabotage him, or knife Taylor in the back. PB just gave John a tiny grin and a small finger wave. He scowled, wishing she would stop the finger waves.
Frank nodded to Taylor, and she followed him from the room to get the details of her assignment. All the men, including John, watched as she left. The tension increased even more when John realized the women were staring at him staring at Taylor. He flushed and the male members of the team were glad for once they weren't in charge. John cleared his throat, then he glared. Pary held up a piece of paper. WRONG CHOICE, JOHN!
Tension in the classroom eased when everyone else laughed. John would have been grateful, except he knew PB was serious.
Do you have something to say, Miss Barry?
he asked, hoping to put her on the spot.
Pary held up one finger, indicating John should wait. She scribbled furiously on her paper and held it up again. Can you read it now? Or do I need to make the letters bigger? I thought if I made them darker you could see it, but maybe you should get your eyes checked.
John sighed. He should have known better. Nothing about Parody Hope Barry was normal, except her looks. Average height and weight, gray eyes, light brown, shoulder length hair. None of those would get her past the front door at the club. So why was she waving her sign?
You have a better choice than Taylor?
he asked. She nodded, as he knew she would. Who?
PB looked around the room. Uhm, pretty much anyone else on the team.
John felt the dull, rusty edge of her comment slice through the room, pitting the team members against the boss.
John glanced about and randomly picked someone as an example. No offense to Kevin, but Pary, do you really think he has a better chance of drawing Big Ease's attention than Taylor?
Pary's eyes were big and serious. Obviously, you've never been clubbing with Kevin! You should see him on the floor, John. He attracts a lot of attention. Even Big Ease would come to watch.
John looked at the young man, who was built like a telephone pole. He imagined Kevin on the dance floor, bending like a stick of chewing gum, and he muttered, I'll take your word for it. Who else did you have in mind?
Sheila.
Sheila sent a grateful smile to PB.
John didn't like the way things were going. Pretty soon Pary would have the whole room revolting and he nearly choked at her choice of the grandmotherly looking, gray haired, short woman. Frank employed a variety of team members, so he could cover a variety of jobs. This job wasn't for a woman like Sheila, who probably didn't even know what rap music was.
Why Sheila?
He didn’t mind putting Pary on the spot.
Because she'd be the only little white gramma in the place. Now if you were there, wouldn't you ask yourself why? And wouldn't you ask Sheila why?
No, I'd suspect she was a plant or a diversion, sent for that exact reason,
John replied.
Well, I guess that makes you smarter than Big Ease then,
Pary shrugged.
Gee, thanks,
John muttered.
You asked,
Pary reminded him.
Yeah, I'm regretting this whole conversation. Who else?
Herbie.
This time John choked
