OLD FRIENDS

Faye sat by the window of the hotel lounge, nursing a large gin and tonic. Her table was booked for 8pm, which meant 20 more minutes of sitting here pretending she was perfectly happy to be on her own, in this room full of laughing groups and smiling couples. Normally, it didn’t bother her, but sometimes, like this evening, she could have done with a bit of company.
A taxi drew up outside and a couple in their 50s climbed out. The man, a rather pompous-looking fellow, was dressed in a fawn-coloured suit. The woman wore a beautiful bohemian-style dress with white trainers. Faye peered out of the window. Something about her was strangely familiar.
