    Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is a type of hormonal disorder that commonly occurs in women of reproductive age. When you suffer from this condition, you may experience prolonged or infrequent menstrual periods. In some cases, you could have excessively high levels of androgens—hormones typically associated with the male reproductive system.

Women with PCOS may develop collections of follicles (fluid) and aren't able to release eggs regularly. Many women suffer from this condition without even knowing it. PCOS mainly affects the ovaries—the reproductive organs responsible for producing progesterone and estrogen. These are the hormones in charge of the menstrual cycle's regulation. Normally, the ovaries also produce small amounts of androgens.

Women's ovaries release eggs regularly for fertilization. An egg is released each month through a process known as ovulation. The hormones in charge of ovulation are the luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). The FSH hormone is in charge of stimulating the ovary so it produces a follicle—an egg-containing sac—while the LH stimulates the ovary so that it releases a mature egg.

PCOS is considered a syndrome—a collection of symptoms affecting ovulation and the ovaries. The main characteristics of PCOS are:

    ●  Cyst formation in the ovaries

    ●  Skipped or irregular periods

    ●  Abnormally high levels of androgens

When you suffer from this condition, several small sacs filled with fluid grow within your ovaries. In fact, the term polycystic literally means many cysts. Actually, these sacs are follicles that contain immature eggs. These eggs don't reach maturity to stimulate ovulation. When this happens, your hormone levels are altered, giving you abnormally low levels of female hormones and abnormally high levels of male hormones. This, in turn, disrupts your menstrual cycle, which is why you could experience fewer menstrual periods than usual. Here are the other effects PCOS may have on your body:

    ●  Depression

When you experience all the hormonal symptoms and bodily changes of PCOS, this can have an adverse effect on your emotions. A lot of women who have PCOS also end up experiencing anxiety and depression because of their condition.

    ●  Endometrial Cancer

Normally, when you menstruate, you also shed your uterine lining. However, if you don't menstruate regularly, this may cause an accumulation of your uterine lining, which increases your risk of developing endometrial cancer.

    ●  Infertility

You can't get pregnant if you don't ovulate. When you don't experience regular ovulation, your ovaries aren’t releasing eggs for sperm to fertilize. This is why PCOS is one of the main causes of infertility.

    ●  Metabolic Syndrome (MS)

Most women who suffer from PCOS are either obese or overweight. This is a huge problem, because both PCOS and obesity increase your risk for low HDL levels and high levels of LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. When you experience all of these, you find yourself at risk for metabolic syndrome—which, in turn, increases your
