Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal condition affecting women of childbearing age and can cause physical symptoms that can be difficult to live with including weight gain, hair growth and acne. While treatment for PCOS’s symptoms varies, there are lifestyle factors, including nutrition and exercise, that can play a key role in managing the condition.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones, affecting menstrual regularity. In a normal menstrual cycle, the ovaries release an egg each month. When PCOS is present, the egg may not develop or be released, instead storing in small cysts called follicles in the wall of the ovary. This may result in irregular or missed periods which can have a significant impact on fertility.
